So it's favorable for freezing rain, sleet, icy roadways here tomorrow... Since the wife and I are carpooling now I'll have the choice of the Camry or the Tacoma (2wd). Camry may do slightly better just driving around, but if something were to happen and we end up off the roadway, the truck would most likely take considerably less damage. If the truck was 4wd it'd be a no brainer :(

    What say you garage?

unfortunately nothing really helps on ice. what sort of tires do you have on the vehicles and do you have anything to put in the bed of the truck for weight? prerunner has a locking rear diff right?

I think the Camry might give you a better chance of staying on the roadway in the first place. Damage is damage, and that's what insurance is for...the lower CG of the Camry may keep you safer there, too.

Yeah, we love to get ice here... I always put a couple buckets of brick/rocks in the back. Mechanical LSD in my Sport. Truck has Hankook Dynapro Atm Camry has Bridgestone Ecopia. Neither are winter tires per say, but both have decent siping for a standard tire.
    high five
    Also considerations I've thought of.

ahhh....OK. I only know 4x4 vehicles, don't see many 2wd trucks up here.
But I do know people who will engage the rear diff and not 4x4 when driving around town and they claim its pretty stable.

    Rules to driving on ice:
go slow, give yourself plenty of room to stop, and keep a light foot on the gas and brake both - if you do start sliding its sometimes better to not hit the brakes, just let off the pedals and let the truck correct itself. ABS sucks when it engages so watch out. if you're taking the truck put something in the bed for weight...kitty litter, sand bags, etc.
i was thinking that too. plus the weight of a car is more evenly distributed so its easier to control the vehicle.
Its 100 degrees colder here right now.

pros/cons of the truck - ATMs would be the better tire to drive on in bad conditions but the truck is going to be harder to control. if you have weight to add that will help. higher COG will make corners a bit trickier. consider taking some air out of the tires - the more surface area that you have in contact with the ground the better off you are but you'll still need to keep your speed down.
camry tires look a little sketchy for winter driving IMO but the car would be easier to control (better weight dist. and lower COG) again, consider taking some air out of the tires to get a little more traction.

If it were me I'd lean more towards the Camry. As much as I love my truck I do hate driving it on ice - 4x4 or not.

I can't blame ya there. The weather isn't for everyone and most of the cool stuff is either closed or just inaccessible in the winter.

if i can im going to air down tonight and take the truck tomorrow since i have a strong feeling someone is going to run into my back bumper and i'd rather take that his in the truck than in the camry. i always give alot of space in my truck but there are those idiots they like to jump in that space and then brake check you.

get to test out tall skinny Cooper ST's on ice :D

This... Before I retired from active duty and bought the truck, I did my same commute, from Palmer to base (Anchorage) in front wheel drive sedans (Tercel/Corolla/accord) on studded Winter tires. Couple close calls, but never any damage or got stuck in 8 yrs. Fwd cars are very good on the road in snow and
    ice.
Or we can all go visit Jim and eat pie with Copper and OTG in FL. :notsure:

EDIT: as far as damage the moose accident was Summer and I suspect I was profiled by said moose. That also makes it Corolla(s) ;)
