    Hey B...remember your sucky truss builders? I think its a disease and its spreading! Or maybe my truss guy has ADD or something. Took me an hour to locate the trusses on a plan today. Usually there's some sort of sequence or order to it all...not here. M01 to T05 to GR03... :annoyed:

    That's ok, I should take a few pics of the truss package we have at the job I'm on. Someone screwed up with the plan. It's all hip roofs with 4' overhangs, the plan sets the hips with nothing to support them :eek:. I had to rig up the one side to brace and raise the hip an inch (it has a bit more baring for the hip), the other side has nothing to support the hip and it's sagging a lot right now

    hips usually have a full span girder that the diagonals and monos run into right? or do you guys just hope that everything will be self supporting once the full system is installed? :laugh:

    Yes there is a girder but with the design of the hip jacks and placement to make everything line up, it pushes the hip almost over the corner of the building. My boss called the company and sent them pics of the issue, they said it's no problem and the truss design is meant to handle the loading :rolleyes:

    I'm doing a lot of bracing to try and correct the issue plus I have some space to place a diagonal brace from the soffit build down to the hip to help hold it up. I checked the corner I did on Thursday and it didn't sag at all over the weekend so I'm hoping it's working lol

    some people just don't stop to think about how its atually going to go together...might be fine on the computer but not so in the real world :laugh:

    it can rain all it wants during the week just so long as its sunny by the weekend :D

    truss designers are not engineers but they do have some training and the software these days takes care of most everything....still needs some human intervention. but you could give the same house plans to three different people and end up with three different results.

    Sort of depends here. Its rare for residential stuff to need stamps. Commercial sometimes. Gov't. Funded stuff yes.

    That's sad. I wouldn't skip it, out of fear of liability, but apparently your owners do not care. I'd get to starting an emergency fund ASAP. Sounds like one lawsuit could bury that company. I know we are a little more "city folk" over here, but that just seems to be plain negligence to me.

    So if you draw it are YOU responsible? Someone has to be...

    we just do whatever the city/county/etc require. lots of things leave here without ever seeing an engineer. sometimes we get things engineered just because its weird/different and we want our butts covered. we have basic charts for most things but not every building is covered by those. we don't do the truss design, those come from the truss plants, and rarely are they stamped.

    Amazing in this day and age where the weather is getting worse and worse.

    Even my po-dunk town wants stamped drawings for all roofs.

    If I put on new shingles I have to "upgrade" my joists to new code and use stamped drawings to do so.

    I was watching a building show in Alaska last night and they said they had no building codes... I kinda feel that hard to believe, but I guess they are a little harder to enforce if they even have them.

    AK is kinda the same as here. If you build in a city there are some requirements/restrictions as far as permitting and codes go but if you're building out in the middle of no where the rules are a lot more lax - for residential stuff. We do a lot of schools/clinics in AK and they all have govt funding plus they're commercial so we have to get that stuff stamped
