Had to have been a black bear with a brown coat. No "brown" bears or griz exist in Arizona.

No need for bear spray or firearms for black bears here, they are more scared of you than you are of them. I've had many bear encounters up in the mtns here in Az and they have always ran away very fast.

I haven't taken Bloody Basin that way better. I have only stayed to the West of the 17. I would like to adventure off that way some time.

Ok a brown colored black bear, then. It was almost a blond color. The lightest black bear I have ever seen.

Yup, but it's always busy with people and we wanted more privacy. Too many mini vans and stock vehicles down there, all usually coming through from Seven Springs.

So according to the stories I heard from the Cave Creek ranger district, there was a big battle between whites and native Americans at Turret Peak (where we were planning to hike to) back in the mid 1800's. The battle was so bad that they named the area Bloody Basin. There are so many artifacts and ruins up on those mesas, you almost trip over them. They showed me a couple really interesting ruins and there were pottery shards and flint-napped hand tools all over the ground. Supposedly some good arrowheads up there around the peak and battle site.
