Well, I guess there are lots of worse things than ball joints

Like forgetting to torque the caliper bolts on my passenger side on Saturday, then having one of the bolts fall out yesterday at lunch and almost fuck everything up when the caliper wedges against the inside of the rim. That could happen.

Let me tell you how hard it was to find a brake caliper bolt for a 2nd gen.

It was a close call. Luckily the top bolt was still in the threading but barely. Just enough to keep the caliper somewhat aligned and still on the rotor. That could have bound up and caused all kinds of mess.

This truck is so overdue for PMs that I'm embarrassed to admit it. 173k miles and I have so much original still on her. Factory hoses, belt, timing chain, rear leafs etc etc. I just have that odd feeling that something is doomed to fail major in the very near future, so I'd rather stay ahead of it and get all this little stuff done. She's running strong, but I know a trail like this will test the limits of flex and endurance so I just want it all dialed in.

I hear ya buddy. It would be nice if all the susp and steering upgrades weren't so expensive on the Tacomas, or hard to find, like the brake caliper hardware is apparently. I didn't mean to poke fun, I'm almost done working the bugs/weaknesses out of my Jeep, and I still find things that can be upgraded. It's 21 years old so age plays a role as well.

My caliper bolts fell off on one of our Chiva falls run and snapped my brake line Adam! That was awesome.

LOL Andrew I've got thicker skin than that :D I've given her 7 hard years and she's a champ so I'm not worried. If I blew the motor, I'd replace it and keep her going. Pricing luckily hasn't been all too bad for what I've done so far, it's just the little unexpected things that for some reason are the most expensive. I guess it's because they aren't as common.

Now that right there is a nightmare. Way out on the trail, and something like that happens. You're down hard until someone can run you back to town and then out there again to do trail repairs. For me, any trail run that doesn't require trail repairs is an absolute success. You're lucky you didn't send that caliper up in the suspension more than that and really tear shit up.

I distinctly remember running a trail with you for the first time and breaking motor mounts, getting a fan destroyed radiator AND breaking a rear axle.. :anonymous: I actually made out pretty well with all that in terms of expense. $750 later all is fixed, and improved apon. At least when bad shit happens, it can modivate you to upgrade so it doesn't happen again.

If you have 4x4 its 2 wheel drive friendly

Na just messing around. If I remember correctly the last 1/3 or more you can do in 2 wheel drive but im sure we will be doing sllot of different exploring and if someone needs help being towed up something we can make it happen.

No I couldn't. I broke my actuator last time on the way in and wasn't able to shift out of 4 low the entire trip I drove it out and left my truck in mammoth.

Edit. This time I will tho.

Was not to bad. Just steep incline but not really any loose rock so was relatively easy to get traction and just climb up.
