    Mine are cranked almost half way down the threads... Feels a bit stiff but very solid an smooth on harder hits

    Yes that sounds like a good idea. But make them very secure to handle the rigors of serious off road in the "low" position. And for reference ARB reccomends three mounting brackets for serious off road. I added a third center bracket on mine.WP_20160812_09_58_05_Pro.jpg

    I know that looks high, but I can stand up under it with a couple inches clearance, and it is no higher than the RTT when both are mounted.

    This is a great trip and good camping trip. I have done the 4x4 trail twice an it traverses some spectacular diverse scenery. I plan to take the easy road this time and will still have a great time. come on out, you will love the group! I'm kind of the oldster in this group, but everyone is friendly.

    Saw on some of the links that a rear locker is highly recomended...

    I've got full skids an sliders.. Think I'll be fine for trail condition when we go?

    First time I did it I only had a lift and sliders. Oh and the second and 3rd time too before we made this a TW event haha. You dont need a locker. Makes it easier but Ive done 100% of the trails and obstacles people have told me I need a locker to do without a locker.

    As @mh.meier said, you don't need a rear locker, plenty of Tacos have made it with opens.

    Just so anyone reading this doesn't get the wrong idea. Cranking the threads down doesn't change the spring rate. The only thing you are changing with more preload is less down travel and more lift.

    If you pay attention you will be fine. That sounds kind of silly, but after 5 hours of on-edge driving it it easy to loose concentration and drop off a big step instead of slowly crawl down it. It is a great experience and I will be at the end to hear all about it if you like!

    so you dont think that preloading/compressing a coil doesnt affect ride quality? I can definitely say that no preload vs what I have is a big difference.. :notsure: excuse my wording.. but if the coil has less travel and movement to absorb impacts due to not having that stroke to absorb.. wouldnt that be a cause of a stiffer ride? sending all that impact into the truck vs through the coil?

    Maybe. I have to go to a wedding in San Diego the weekend before. Depends on school really. Hopefully someone on the 4WD side drops out so I can slide in.
    Spring theory and Hooke's law. It might simulate a stiffer ride because your coil is binding during up travel or the lack of down travel. It also could be due to valving and shaft speed at certain points of the shock.

    I was going to say coil bind.. but I know its technically not binding.. not to the extreme anyways. but that's what I was thinking of when explaining it. lol

    regardless.. i dont really care. lol the truck rides great to me.. and I just crank it till I feel fit.. for height mostly. I like having more up travel. helps with stuffing during usual driving and some wheeling situations.

    So the #650 coil (that requires less preload) will give me a bit more down travel (at the same ride height I'm at now)?

    And also be a bit stiffer or about the same?

    My cvs hate me rn for the ride height I'm at.

    Yes it should. Also with that bumper and skids I would think a 650lb spring would be better suited.

    Yea the skids are heavy AF... should have just got the 650# in the beginning but...:annoyed:

    Your down travel is limited by the shock, not the coil. Switching from a 600 to 650 only changes the pure amount of preload required to get the same amount of lift. Heavier coil, less preload. Your CV's hate you because of how much lift you're running.

    What I suggest is to run the lightest coil you can while still setting your lift at a reasonable height and not having your coil bind during up travel. Because then during low speed crawling, it will be easier for your suspension to compress. For high speed stuff with a lighter coil, you need stiffer valving, but that's the best of both worlds
