I have no connection personally or by acquaintance with the world of car sales. But the markup on cars is very small compared with many other large ticket items. I recently had a geothermal heating system installed, and the unit markup was well over 100%. The markup on furniture is more like 300% I think. Add to this skimpy markup a tradition of haggling by customers, and an adversarial environment is almost bound to come about. This doesn't excuse those on both sides of the transaction who behave in a way that shows they have completely surrendered all values and scruples. But if you took the same two people, customer and salesman, and switched their roles, I doubt if the ethical tenor of the situation would improve.

I'm not saying this in a mean way. But you have no clue.

When I was a service manager for toyota I made 150k a year. My sale manager made 300 and the gm made 600k. The average sales guy made 75k. Our building overhead was 46k a month our employee cost was 1.2 a month.

You think we made that by making 500$ a car

Yes. Jewelry is an out and out scam. I bought two wedding rings, and now I'm finished buying jewelry forever.

So after the first mistake you decided to make another. I can see why you feel it's a bad investment.

Well, there are more profit centers in a dealership than unit sales. I was considering only the role of salesman and customer and the markup on vehicles.

Sales made up 68 percent. That's a boat load.

Keep in mind finance is still sales.

I am having the same problem. My deliver to dealer (which was changed) is 10/29-11/3. The salesman doesn't seem to want to give a straight answer and he likes to remind me how little he is making off this deal. Some of us are just not good at being patient its bugging the crap out of me too.

If that figure represents only vehicle sales and omits parts, etc, then that really surprises me. Either my idea of the markup is wrong, or dealers must sell more cars than I figured. As I said, I have no connection with the auto sales world, so I'm reasoning on derived information.

What do you think they make on the average car sale? Forget about leases just sales.

Not to far off, goal was 12. We also moved an average of 100+ cars a month at the time. Now used car also averaged 1350 a car. That's strong.

My service department saw an average of 100 cars a day. We had an 88k gm dollars a month average.
