Well, I picked my alternator up today, an went to install it, and it was a no go. Seemed like it was taller than the original. Hopefully it was boxed wrong or something.

ran into a snag with the truck. It stopped charing and the charge light is on on the dash. Also, If you disconnect the positive battery cable while its running, the truck cuts off. I replaced the alternator and it is still doing the same thing. I cant find a fuse or anything like that for the alternator. I am wondering if its the external voltage regulator. Any advice would be great!

Return the alternator and get an internally regulated from a later model, they pump a little more juice too. You can search for a write-up on the wiring process. As a matter of fact, I have my 85's old alternator at home if you want it, you're welcome to have it.

Are you running a GM 1 wire? What is required on that swap?

Yea, well mine is technically 2 wires. It's a powermaster 100 amp 12si, mounted with a Trail Gear mount. I got a harness plug from napa and spliced it into the factory wires leaving one factory wire (white I think) unused, and 8 gauge wire straight to the battery. The hardest part was swapping the mounts.

I think the external voltage regulator may be my problem. The old alternator was bad as well, bearing had a ton of play in it. Do you know if there are any fuses related to the alternator in the harness? There is not on in my fuse panel.

Fuses under the dash, too. If all the fuses are fine I would assume the regulator is bad. If that's the case go ahead and upgrade, wether its just a newer internally regulated unit or a higher output GM setup. You can have my mount and alternator if you want.

I looked in the panel under my dash and there is everything except alternator. My neighbor has a toyota grave yard, may just snag a voltage regulator off of it just I see if it will work.

I read somewhere that it's the same fuse as the fuel gauge? Can't say how true it is. Anyway good look getting it going. Let me know if you want my parts, no purchase necessary. Happy thanksgiving bo.

Ill do it pal, I am going to take you up on the extra parts. Id like to have them as backup. I hope a voltage regulator will get me going for now, and i can grab that other alt and bracket the 14th unless I end up needing it sooner. Happy thanks giving to you and your family as well
