It's as likely to get crushed/sparked/explode inside as it is outside. Certain states/provinces require it to be located above a certain height, so as to minimize chance of direct impact in a rear-end collision, but other than that, it's all good.

We're discussing jerry cans, not vehicle gas tanks. In any serious impact, a jerry can in the bed is just as likely to get crushed as one mounted on a swing-out.

@0210 just checked in the garage, the ones I got from Canadian tire are scepter lol. Maybe that's why I haven't had a problem.

Isn't listed on their site as scepter but they say scepter on the cans.

I believe that you're welcome to use, or not use, a jerry can in whatever manner you want, and that it makes zero difference to me.

I think a Jerry can will make an accident rather interesting. More of a Hollywood flare to it. Know what I mean.

I found "Scepter" ones on the Canadian Tire site just now. They're not the military version I linked above, but if they're made to the same standards, they should be just fine. Form factor also plays a role - the thinner/taller ones are easier to transport.

In fact if all the mythbuster episodes taught me anything. For added effect make sure to keep a few boxes of strike anywhere matches on the side.

In a direct impact, sure, it's possible. Most of these cans are made to be explosion proof (or something like that - don't quote me). The whole point of elevating them on a swing out is to prevent direct contact from a rear-ender. And if you get hit by something tall enough to touch the jerry can, you'll have much, much bigger problems to worry about. I wouldn't think twice about carrying a couple on a swingout.

Mine are the 4wd military ones on the site. Just aren't listed on there as scepter

Aight @Joe23, I'm off to walk the dog and see if I can fully disable VSC for some proper donut action.

Just to be clear that was sarcasm lol. I wouldn't even have them unless I was wheeling anyways. But I agree with you. Wouldn't be concerned

Two 20l cans is half a tank. That 200km could be the difference of getting off the trail and not.

Lmao I'll try in the morning when I get to work. Lot is empty at that time.

See if it's any different on the off road

Depends where you are. I've gone hunting in Northern Ontario where you need to pay close attention to stations. Sometimes there isn't another for 200km. If you're at 1/4 you could be walking. Trust I've seen it lol.

The online manual, page 248, doesn't show a way to disable it fully. Just says that VSC turns off, but auto LSD turns on. When I was playing with this the other day, it sounded/felt like some sort of traction aiding system was kicking in from the front - ABS like. Will mess around with it again and see if I make any headway.

@HutchJ there's times where I can see myself doing it.

But I'm more so interested in an extended range tank. Say 100L or 120L

Smaller towns in interior of BC regularly suffer gas shortages and electrical outages. If you're out and they can't provide, you're stuck until they're operational again. Can't count the number of times I've seen it. I never head to the interior without at least 20L of extra gas.
