Yes, I know this has been discussed somewhat before and, yes, I did a search with no real result and, no, I did not find anything while (briefly) searching the California vehicle code and the web.

What's with this supposed DOT rule that gas cans have to be red, I heard, and how does that affect the lucky ones here having NATO cans...?

Added: and oh yes, I know that in the free parts of the country anything goes, so don't rub it in, please... :)

According to proposition 65, in California, all jerrycans sold after 1986 must be clear and free of cancer causing chemicals. Especially if they are sold in Beverly Hills.

There are apparently no DOT requirements for color. Someone on ExPo actually talked on the phone to someone at DOT and was specifically told DOT doesn't care about the color.

CARB does specifically require colors (red for gasoline) to be a CARB approved container for sale in CA. Of course you can buy outside CA and bring into CA and do whatever you please. CARB just regulates what can be sold.

    https://www.arb.ca.gov/regact/pfc/2005/cp501.pdf

I really wouldn't worry about it and just do whatever you please.

Somewhat related to this discussion, a company named Combined Manufacturing makes a spout they call the EZ-Pour, to replace those god-awful CARB approved things. Not cheap @ $10 at Tractor Supply around here, but worth every penny in lessened aggravation...
