    Hey another Davidson Taco.

Looks good. I need to bite the bullet and get wheels/tires for my truck now.

The wheels/tires made the biggest visual difference, and the 4.5" backspacing is just perfect! The wheels now sit just barely proud of the fender flares giving a perfect stance. It looks silly to have the wheels sit 1-2" inside the wheel well.

Any pics of this? I have mine mounted on a suction mount and need a better solution.

Where did you route your wires?

I don't have pics of the wiring, but it's super easy to run the wires just under the edge of the headliner, inside the passenger A pillar and behind the trim of the footwell. I did mine and my friend's 2nd gen both in under 30min.

And since you're local to me, I actually have a spare 3D printed adapter for the Rexing to GoPro mount, if you have the Rexing camera. It didn't come out perfectly, but it works and is free if you want it.

    Catching up on some things...

    Diff Breather Mod
My friend and I did the rear diff breather mod, it was pretty simple, took maybe 20min on each truck (his is 2nd gen, it's the same).
    Sorry no pics

    Bussman RTMR Relay Box
The following weekend I got a couple Bussman RTMR's off eBay during a 15% off sale. We hooked up my friend's, cleaning up his engine bay quite a bit.
I don't want to install anything else electrical before installing my RTMR which I plan on doing in the next couple weeks.

    Random Pic
Interestingly I was parked next to a stock sport at work and it was funny to see the difference in lift vs stock side by side.
    image.jpg

    SOS Sliders and IFS Skid
I got in on the last SOS sale, everything was ready in 6 weeks as expected (quoted 6-8), and I picked them up since a tank of gas was cheaper than shipping. Eddy is a super nice guy and the workmanship is great!
    image.jpg
I hit everything with a scotchbrite pad then wiped it down with alcohol.
I gave it 2 coats of Rustoleum self etching primer.
    image.jpg
Lastly I used a total of 5.5 cans of Rustoleum spray on bed liner giving everything about 4 coats. It came out awesome! I love the light texture and satin finish, not too rough and definitely not slick.
    image.jpg

It took a little work to get them mounted up, definitely have a friend help. I head to drill out 2 holes in the frame on each side and a HF step bit made super quick work of it. I first tried normal drill bits, took forever.
Even the wife likes them, mostly because she has something to step on now haha.
    image.jpg

    OCD Glove Box Organizer
After getting the OCD console organizer, I was contemplating 3D printing a glove box version. Thankfully they released one for the 3rd gen finally because $17 is a lot cheaper than it would cost me to design and print one. Our trucks should come stock with this!!

    Sold Stock Suspension
Well it took a a little while, almost 2mo, but I finally sold the last of my stock suspension components. I was able to recoup $400 after shipping for the stock shocks, coils, leafs, and UCA's. That's like getting a 25% rebate on my lift. I learned that it's 10x easier to sell the shocks and coils together and ideally the fronts assembled.

    Cab Mount Chop (CMC)
I initially ranked "no need for a CMC" to be #1 in choosing my wheel/tire combo. Little did I know that the CMC is a bit of a misnomer IMO. All you're doing is shaving the rounded part of the mount that protrudes in front of the firewall and into the wheel well. Even before my lift, I was rubbing a little bit while turning into my driveway.
When I installed the lift, I began flexing the suspension a little more and was still rubbing. Since my friend has a welder and did his CMC, I decided what the heck.
I tried to take the chop back as far as I could so that I would only ever have to do this once. We found an angle grinder and cut off wheel worked best, but mainly because my 16gal dewalt compressor couldn't keep up with my cut off tool.
    image.jpg
Pro tip: don't wear a brand new shirt and be sure to wear ear pro, goggles, and a jacket or welding gloves!
    image.jpg

I did the majority of the cutting and let my friend do the welding. I bought SOS plates but we ended up just cutting our own from some extra plate I had so that we could get them to fit perfectly.
    image.jpg
It took us the better part of a day to complete it. I finished it off with rubberized under coating, 4-5 layers, including on the inside of the mount.

    Pinch Weld Folding
I was still getting some rubbing but now it was the tire catching the wheel well liner. I trimmed a little bit of it off but I want to keep as much of the liner as possible. I realized the pinch weld was pushing the liner into the tire.

This was super easy. I removed the front wheels, folded the wheel liner back and took a 2lb sledge to the verticle pinch weld. I decided to fold the weld outward and only did about 8" from the bottom. I wasn't concerned with making it super flat since my rubbing was very minor. You can also see my CMC in these pics.

    image.jpg

    After:
    image.jpg
I gave it a verrry liberal coating of rubberized undercoating spray and let it set up for 24hr. I just put a 1" washer and self tapper in the bottom inside corner of each wheel liner, into the folded part of the pinch weld. I now have tons of clearance and plan on wheeling in the next few weeks.

    5K Service
Had my 5k service Friday and to no surprise for a clean bill of health.

Unfortunately, while under my truck yesterday, I noticed that my rear doff is weeping at 3 different spots. I checked the gear oil and found its about 1/2” low. At only 5k, this is a little concerning.
    D42A593B-D05E-449B-9736-8354EC0E7244.jpg CE0FD104-449A-4D48-A3AC-FFBC87BF8F3F.jpg 2B06F6E7-60A2-432A-AA9E-CBDFC1991F1E.jpg 1E9B5FBB-25C5-476E-ABCF-7B6274E1BD5E.jpg

I took it back to the dealer this morning to ask them why they didn’t catch this when their checklist says they checked all fluids and topped them off, among other things. The service writer had no explanation, agreed with me, and scheduled a Tuesday appointment to get it fixed under warranty.

Thanks! Not yet, I'm trying to get out there with a local group one of the next few weekends. I just want to make sure I go out with someone who knows a little more than me about off roading and those trails than I do. For the record, I know next to nothing haha. I know to stay off trails that start with "D".

We were out there Saturday, almost 20 of us. Majority of us went up the backside of Daniel with no problems. I'm told the front part of Daniel is the toughest part of the trails.

    First Oil Change
I don’t really like the idea of waiting 10k on the first oil change. I did mine at 5457 and since it’s only $30 for Castrol Full Syn & OEM filter I plan on doing my own oil every 5k and let Toyota Care do them on the 10’s.

Unfortunately my oil catch tray isn’t made for Tacomas. The pan drained with so much force that it splashed all over the place. Thankfully I keep some kitty litter on hand.

Follow up on Rear Diff Weeping:

So the dealer claims that the weeping was so minor that there is no measurable loss of oil. They say the factory puts in the exact amount of gear oil vs filling to the bottom of the fill hole like we usually do. Because of that, that’s why it seems like it’s 1/2” low.

They wouldn’t add any oil and claimed because the oil level was in spec Toyota wouldn’t cover replacing the seal. I didn’t push the issue of adding oil because I’ll do that myself. If it leaked, there is obviously less oil.

They did retorque the diff cover bolts and noted the issue in my file.

I went off roading yesterday for the first time and had a great time with some guys from a local Toyota group including TW members. Uwharrie National Forest in NC, right in the middle of the state.
