Btw, I have the same experience with the one particular area in the rear cabin about the cab vents.
Can you upload a pic of that piece and material you used? Thanks

That is quite impressive that you ripped out your entire interior 3 weeks in! I tore out my entire suspension 1mo in but the interior is a little more nerve racking IMO!

I’m still playing around with solutions here but for now I just put some 1/8” open cell foam loosely stuffed in the vents. I think I need something more like 3/8” thick or possibly cut out a wedge shaped chunk of foam that sits inside nicely yet doesn’t block the vent flaps.

This pic was taken earlier today to mainly show how my amp is mounted with everything reassembled.

Ahhh! I see.. hmmm.. I was wondering about that vent how it's a direct air vent from the worst imaginable placing. How about making a box or this blue plastic enclosure (not exactly I would put there but an idea) box and stuff it with the open cell foam as shown on pic? Just an idea and throwing it out there.

Thanks for the response and hoping we could help each other with future projects.

Btw, what subwoofer are you planning on getting back there. I measured the JBL subwoofer and overall length is 9 inch!! Can we add a 10 inch with 9 inch adapter on the OEM enclosure for the subwoofer?

Those vents are interesting... on 2nd gene they only have 1 vent, DC and AC. When driving down the road the vent is louder and opens up more as you drive faster. If you crack a window or the sunroof, the vents close and the noise from your window is much quieter. If you put your HVAC on recirculating the vent noise gets a little quieter. It seems like it’s trying to equalize cabin pressure. That said it can’t be sealed off so open cell foam is a must vs closed cell.

I thought about some sort of box over the vents but since I want to put a MOLLE type accessory panel over the back wall, I need to preserve every 1/2” of depth that I can. I could design and 3D print something to fit snugly, in the same spirit as your blue basket.

I had the idea to get speaker baffles like this
    https://www.crutchfield.com/S-iZsRfEqtC8R/p_237XT41/XTC-4-x10-Speaker-Baffles-4-7-8-depth.html
and cut a series of holes for air to pass but I don’t think it would be ideal.

I’m going to mock up my “wedge shaped idea” at some point this week and share pics. Since this is such a big source of cabin noise, I’ll try to share my final solution in a way that others can replicate.

And I may or may not add a sub. If I do it’ll be an under seat sub like the Kicker Hideaway. I had one in my WRX 5yr ago and it was great while not being overpowering. I had a 12” L7 @ 1k RMS in my first car and I simply don’t need or want that kind of sound anymore. I like a much more balanced sound and will see if I get that from 6x9 components and 6.5 coaxials. If not, I’ll add the hideaway.

Btw @Impoy47 I love the voodoo blue!! It’s such a nice, bold, yet not “screaming at you constantly” color.

Yah that MOLLE type is a sweet set up..

Very informative indeed in why those cab vents are there..

And those speaker baffles is a good idea and a start . I'm surprised no one ever mentioned this problem on any post? Why Toyota, why?!!

And yeah, about the Voodoo blue. I've had a black and white colored vehicles in the past and it was a safe bet.. The Voodoo Blue is pretty bold and since this is the TRD Pro "EXCLUSIVE COLOR", I said what the heck, "you only live once!"

Thanks again for your time and input on your future projects. I'll see what I can come up on that cab vent and I'll share it on your post.

Btw, I think that Subwoofer in the back is an 8 inch baffle diameter and outside diameter is 9 inch.. gonna start shopping for speakers!!

I grabbed some maxxtrax knock offs as a daily deal on Amazon for like $60. I used them twice to get cars unstuck when we had like 4-6” of snow a couple weeks ago. But I wanted a way to mount them in the bed.

My friend @Tacomasprime05 had a good idea to use some flat steel that attaches to the bed rail track, on the back side of the bottom has a rubber bumper, and in the middle has a bolt that goes through the boards. I decid d to secure the boards with nylon handles.

It was tough to find 6” long 1/2”x13 stainless bolts that weren’t crazy expensive or made me buy 10+. I ended up just getting 12” of all thread rod, cut it in half, JB Welded a nut on the back side to create a faux-bolt head.

I taped off the top ~2” of threads and painted the brackets with Krylon Pro enamel paint. This paint is awesome! It doesn’t say but must be a very high % solids because it gives a very high quality finish, almost like powdercoat.

I also painted my tow hook red with the same paint, again awesome stuff.

Got around to installing my tow hook today. The red paint came out great. Small thing but I like it.

Almost forgot to add this from a month ago or so. @Tacomasprime05 let me use his welder to weld some nuts on the backside of my SOS skid to make use of the oil change port much easier. I chose square nuts to give me more surface area to weld.
No more snaking my arm around to put a wrench behind to hold the bolts.

Agreed. Had to go look up his screen name... @EddyRRT what do you think about adding this as a feature for the skids? Seems like a small but super useful upgrade!

After about a week of being posted, I sold my OEM sub and enclosure on fleabay. Now to order my speakers adapters and AmpPro with those funds.

I found this from home depot and worked pretty well in the cabin vent area as well. Unless you came up with a mod. And your right , isolating that area with some type of foam cell significantly reduced the outside noise and drone sound from my MBRP dual exhaust to slight humm as if coming from another vehicle. And with the deadening mats and resonator exhaust tips. Close to non existent.. no cabin pressure ear popping !!

Thank you again for that great idea.

Haha it's funny, that's the exact product I saw in Lowes and thought I could cut some angled blocks and stick them in each section of the vents, taking advantage of the adhesive on the backside. I just didn't buy it because I didn't want to spend $14.
Guess I need to just do it since I'm almost done with my CAD drawing of the MOLLE storage panel so that I can get the job quoted locally.

Thanks for the feedback on this idea!

I got a bunch of Amazon gift cards for my birthday so I bought all of the odds and ends I’ll need to install my new setup. Only thing left is the amp itself.

I expect to do the install along with a detailed install thread in the next 4-6wk.

I also just bought @Hoangde ‘s anytime rear camera mod. I have to figure out how to get the anytimerearcamera.com dual switch to fit or find a tall version of the same since that’s exactly what I want. I could remove my wireless charge button since I don’t have a compatible phone. I have spare tall switches, no short ones.

I finally got around to getting that foam from Lowes and made the cab vent baffles.

I used the large a/c seal vs the small that @Impoy47 used and I did this so that I could use one foam block for each “double vent”. There are 4 “doubles” on each side of the cab.

I cut the foam in 1” thick pieces, cut about a 1/2” off the height, then cut a bevel so that the rubber flaps can still open, and finally cut a small notch to get around the divider in each “double”. The notch goes down and the bevel goes towards the bed.

I cut 8 of these and they fit in here nice and snug, no adhesive needed, and work really well so far! I’m going to try to do a controlled test with a db meter on my phone.

1” thick block on right, finished product on left.

It’s been a while and I’ve gotten side tracked with many other projects and hobbies.

My PC can’t handle the CAD file that I created for the rear wall panel so that’s on hold.

I finally got the last piece for my full JBL audio overhaul!!! I’m planning on doing the install 2 weekends from now. Ok also be installing an anytime rear camera mod.

Finally got the time to do my audio install and finished the write up last night.

    LINK HERE

I had the whole interior apart at different times, kind of scared the wife lol.
    3FD9ECA5-A9A7-48A0-AFA2-4EA1BAC60B34.jpg

To summarize, I replaced all of the speakers with JBL Clubs, added a Kicker Key compact amp, ditched the OE sub and installed a Sound Ordnance 8” under the driver’s seat, and utilized a PAC AmpPro to maintain full functionality of the OE HU. I am very happy with this new setup!!

Took it for a drive today to enjoy the new audio and found a good spot for a quick pic.
