    Hello,

I’m in the process of finishing upgrading my set up going from a JL AUDIO STEALTH BOX for an 06 DC to a custom Mr Marv made box for ONE 13TW5 in the same location of the stealth box (behind the 60% seat behind rear seat passenger side ONLY)

    AWESOME BOX BY MR MARV.

Is a tight fit back there... the fiber glass on a stealth box is molded to recess or sink the subs so this keeps them away from the back of the seat, plenty of room.

You don’t have that luxury with a solid Mr Marv birch box, so it makes for a tighter fit.

If you have 13TW5 in your Taco, can you answer a couple of questions for me?

Any suggestions for the final fitting?
Should I remove the flat plastic panel behind the seat??
Does it gives the 13TW5 extra room for the sub excursion??
Without the rear plastic panel off the back of the seat, can you use a JL sub grill??

Also, I see A LOT of different setups using different subs here on TacomaWorld, I see that MOST (pretty much all the ones I have seen) people with custom boxes behind the seats DO NOT USE GRILLS ON THE SUBS...

Good idea? Bad idea? I figure since the subs are behind the seat they are somewhat protected, but what about sub excursion??

    Thanks!

    Rick

I took my plastic panel off the backseat and used a grill to protect the sub. Small cost for the extra protection.

For the price you’re spending on that setup, I’d do it.

Gonzo, you are 1000% correct - it’s worth it to protect a $700 driver. Plastic is gone!

Share the pics when you get it finish! I’m switching to the TW3 from the JLW1 this week. Kicking myself for not going up to the TW to begin with.

Nice! I got my TW3 installed today to replace my JLW1. I like what you did with the cut out and insert. How did you go about doing it and what did you put in there to fill it.

Also, I noticed you had a Alpine HU, are you using the tuneit app for the eq/crossover configuration?

Is that a Mr Marv enclosure for the TW5? If not who built the enclosure?

Did you have to cut out the back of the plastic cover on the rear in order to get the box in?
    Thanks

looks killer! I like the edge covered in the setback plastic - that makes it look so professional.
did you do anything with door speakers ? I have JBL from factory and just wanting to bump up the sound level and want crisp notes.

Used a template and transferred exactly to the back of the seat. Traced the template on the back of the seat and took my time with a Dremmel and a cutting wheel.

Then I bought some black canvas at Michael’s and used some hog rings I had left over from when I installed my Katzkins and lay it down inside the back of the seat. Then used some edge trim for car doors to dress the edge on the cutout and put it all back together.

    Easy day!

    What haven’t I changed?
I built my own box years ago and coated it with Line-X. Since the MDF I used was quite thick, I recessed the mounting ring a little bit. In hindsight, I guess my only regret is that the face of the sub box is sloped instead of vertical which allowed the bottom of the sub to hit the seatback plastic. If the face had been vertical then I could have set the sub back from the seat a little more and avoided that issue. I never have that seat back down anyway so I just removed the plastic panel completely.

    Test fit

    Coated and installed
