Keep your ear out for the throw out bearing ‘squeal’. The input shaft to the tranny is a softer mettle and gouges with time (hence the noise). Most of us driving the 6psd manual have the problem.
The fix involves dropping the tranny and installing a sleeve from URD

As for the tailgate lock, consider the electronic lock. You get to keep the factory handle and it unlocks/locks with your key fob or the door lock button.

Wow I need to find the time to do that but looks like you were pretty thorough. My seals are squeaking too...thanks for the info!

Yea I have a pop n lock too and they aren't that great but better than nothing! I've had mine installed for two years now and it still works surprisingly.

It is nice to have a key hole on the tailgate though in case you want to keep your doors locked but load or unload things out of the bed...maybe not that important for most people but just personal preference I guess.

I wouldn’t mind a keyed handle, but I prefer the quality of the Toyota handle.

That is true the stock tailgate handle is better quality...thats why I saved it just in case the pop n lock fails.

I never been in a turd gen but that is pretty bad if you are right. From the looks of it, it seems like it is nicer and more updated than my truck. With that said, I too hate the looks of the 3rd gen exterior but some people like it.:notsure:

Too bad a 3rd gen handle won’t fit the 2nd gen.

Sorry, I bought the Access cab you were looking for. I think it’s the only one in existence. Ha

Yea that would be great if it did. All well I’d still take a 2nd gen like the OP has over a new tacoma.

Dude - I've owned both trucks, the interior of the 3rd Gen is much better. Unless my 2nd Gen has a custom interior, it rattles, is cheap, plastically and offers little in the way of convenience options.

Nope. Had the electronic version on my 2016. It failed within two months, which is why I went with the manual keyed version.

Amazon. I'm not going to post a link since I'm not sold on the one I bought. I don't want to endorse something until I'm happy with it.

The interior IS nicer in a 3rd Gen. The electronics, seats, heated seats, colors, instrument cluster, mirror, etc. Everything to me seemed like an upgrade.

When did you buy it? In Santa Cruz very recently? lol

Let me know when/if you decide that is a good one.
I'm looking for one, but I would like one that is a total replacement for the rearview mirror and not one that clips on to existing mirror.

I've only seen one total replacement mirror. It's between $260 and $300.

I have two. One was $109 and the other was around $150. The $150 one seems to work better than the $109 version. It also has things displayed in MPH and Waze seems to run more reliably. I'm going to return the mirror I showed in this post.

I’ve had the same electric lock for over 4 years/70k miles with no problems.

I have a tonneau cover that can be opened with the tailgate closed. So even if the lock were to go bad, I can still access the tailgate cover and remove it if need be.

With the soft cover I have, you can peek in on the corners. I would guess within 10 minutes, I could have the handles released to get the top open. If the handle broke, it would be a pain in the ass. I may actually add a safety pull cable inside of the bed cover to use in case of emergency.

That’s what mine came with. A little pull cord to release the lock. It’s the same cord you use to normally release it, but it’s accessible with the tailgate closed.

That was my original worry with the lock, but since I can open it either way, it’s not an issue.
