Hello there fellow Taco lovers. I'm helping my dad purchase a 180K miles 2006 Tacoma Double Cab automatic from a friend for $10k. We're both feeling like it's a good deal. The cons are his transmission slips a bit since he did a flush a few thousand miles ago. It throws code P0750 but he's already replaced all the solenoids and cleaned the filter. My dad may just splurge on a new transmission, but I'm hoping we can try to find what's wrong and replace that or buy a used one. What do you guys think?

I saw a Xrunner 6 speed for sale, but the ECU would be needed to make that work along with the clutch, master cylinder flywheel etc huh? He's gonna use it for work, so the 6 speed may not even be a good idea, I'm just a curious child.

Welcome to TW... are you really looking for a project? What is the time line on getting this all done, either with 06 or the x runner? Not saying either is a bad purchase, just need more details. How are the frames on the trucks, how are the motor mounts on the 06..... there are questions that need to be answered. 2wd on the o6 or 4wd. The x runner is obviously 2wd.

06 is 2WD, the swap is really a maybe, more than likely it’s staying automatic, don’t REALLY wanna go thru the trouble of the swap. I just more wanted the opinion on an automatic trans going out, and how realistic the fixing is, or if we should just go for another auto

The automatic will be more feasible vs the 5/6speed. Every 4 to 6 years you need a new a clutch vs to auto on needing a drain and refill. Do not flush, unless you are willing to pull the transmission pan and clean the screen. Sane thing with the power steering. Drain. Clean the screen an refill with fresh automatic trans fluid (or whatever the cap says to refill it with).

Yeah I know he flushed it because it was lurching he says but he didn’t realize it was kinda normal. He mentions no shimmer was found when it was flushed, he replaced the filter and all the solenoids but it still has P0750 so I’m like hmmm I wonder what it could be. I read online one guy fixed his cuz it was a bad connection at the harness so there’s a few things we will have to go thru.

That 10k truck could turn into a financial disaster. Probably why someone wants to get rid of it to begin with.

Could it also be the other way around? How does 10k sound for a Pre Runner TRD Off Road with 180k?

I feel like because of the price you’re being extra cautious and it sounds like a trap, I appreciate the sentiment.

It would be interesting to know if the trans was filled correctly?

I believe he attempted to follow the right procedure, but it would be worth a check.
