Ha flying crew chiefs get flight pay too, and you only have to fly 4 times a quarter to get it. I was a flying crew chief on 60s for about 2 years. I just recently switched jobs to to Quality Assurance, so I no longer fix and fly on the 60s. Everyone knows that mechanics are the coolest. If aircraft don't fly in the Air Force there is no Air Force.

Congrats on picking the AF. Basic is not too hard, just pay attention to detail and remember that you are all a team. Don't be an individual. They teach teamwork.

I can't recall meeting anyone saying, "I should have joined the Army/Navy" but have a lot of friends that say, "I should have joined the AF." As stated, pay attention and learn your job and you should do fine. Also, watch out who you associate with. Things are changing and trouble leads to termination of service. Keep you nose clean, if you are under 21 stay away from drinking. A lot of commanders aren't playing around with that now.

    Dave,

Derek's advice is right on the mark. It's been going that way for the last 5 years or more. I lost one of my better controllers (I'm retired Command and Control) to discharge because I couldn't get through to him not to drink. The final straw was when he showed late while going through Alcohol treatment program because he partied the night before and was hungover...duh right? Shame, because stone sober he was great at the job. Don't fall into that trap. Not to sound like the old man, but what the hell.... I am, keep your associations in check...wrong folks can drag you down with them. Best of Luck!

I love it when people tell me what I have heard/done. You can see, first hand, the difference between the Army and the Air Force. Remember, pay attention to detail!

The devil is in the details!
Remember, the Air Force had to pick the slack of the Army in recent years! Among the jobs the Army didn't want to do were convoy's (resupply was the AF's job we were told) and intel for those convoys (including intel gathered from the ground) fell to the AF. We still have AF personnel performing convoy's to FOBs. Those FOBs that Army as well as USAF personnel. I highly doubt you will find any deployed setting that does not have USAF troops.

BTW, we love the Army. The only self-loading cargo around!
