Too late we are already married. We've been married for 7 years and have a 23 month old little girl. We've always had one checking account and have always done fine. Which I know things started getting tight after we had our first child (not putting off or regret anything). Sometimes I catch my wife saying we need to get this or I have a JC penny coupon if I spend $30 or $40, I get $10 off. I'm think to myself yeah but if you don't go at all you will save $20-$30. Sometimes I tell her that and she get frustrated.

I thought about opening a seperate savings account and having my job put $$ in it but I feel like thats hiding something and don't feel right. Maybe I could put money in our savings acount which neither of us contribute to right now.

When I first got married we had separate accounts and she was finding it wasn't working. (Didn't make sense to use to spend like we are rooming together and not married, you pay this and i'll pay that, felt like we were back with room mates). We decided to go with a joint account made things a little easier. I do however have a separate account that I put partial monies into for emergency's...I've told her to do the same putting in $50 per check. As long as their is no nonsense spending we do ok. That's what the separate accounts are for, nonsense spending...

A lot of the times I think it boils down to not having a lot of cash left over out of our checks each week to save, most goes to daycare and bills. not sure if this would be a good idea or not. After we pay the weekly bills go to the atm and get the rest in cash and then thats what we have to spend. Put $20 in savings each weeks except for the house payment week.

One account since the beginning and have been together for 12 years. I would never have a separate account and don't agree with doing this.

I know there are those that do fine with separate accounts, but in my opinion doing so often leads to erratic spending and trust issues.

To make a joined account work you need to have good communication surrounding the budget and both need to keep their eye on the prize (i.e. paying off a car). If the person you married can't understand the end goal and there’s a constant issue with finances and how to spend, then this will always be a problem.

I myself would have never married someone who blows money on stupid shit without discussing it with me first and I would expect the same from her.... call me out when I want to blow money on something stupid.

Separate accounts to me screams inability to commit; just seems like both husband and wife have one foot out the door and want to do what they want to do without discussing it with the person they married, that makes no sense to me at all.

    Just my 2 cents though

    Joint and separate.
Joint is where the paychecks automatically go and is used to pay all bills.
    :help:

Separate account for each of us that is funded from the joint account. We can do whatever we want with that money. It's perfect if I want to surprise her with a gift, or buy a welder. We always get paid first too for sanity sake. Well, first after the mortgage I mean....

One more thing. My Mrs. will also spend $30 because she has a $10 coupon. The secret to prevent that is to make sure the $30 isn't there to spend. I set up quite a few different savings accounts that automatically withdraw modest sums each week or every other week. Like $20 into a vacation account, $30 into a long term savings account. It adds up over time and every time she looks at the joint account balance she see's there's not enough to spend a frivolous $30.
    Works perfectly!

(I use capitalone360.com for savings, lets you log in and set up multiple different accounts with multiple different saving plans for each).

I do wish we had a little more play money though. The funding for our separate accounts are small and it takes me forever to save enough for toys.

my friend is getting a divorce. well, no..my friendS are getting divorced. i like them both.

having separate accounts makes it easier and neater to divorce. this thing is going down all friendly-like.
