jump pack AMPS

I got one of those battery jump packs, but I think it is under powered for my 3rd gen.

Have any of you had good luck with one? How many amps does it have?

I've had several brands and have jumped many people. Knock on wood, the Tacoma hasn't needed it yet.

My experience with these things is that they can be surprisingly tricky to operate. Make sure you have a solid, clean connection at the terminals. Number one cause of a jump failure is not cleaning the crud before hooking up.

Also, patience. Sometimes a car fires right up, sometimes you have to let it sit for a minute, until the dead battery has enough of a charge to stop counteracting your efforts. Last year I jumped someone at a nearby campsite. We woke up to 20 degree weather in the Smokies - gorgeous morning but this poor couple were not having fun. The hardest part of the jump was convincing the guy to get his hands off the ignition for a minute and let the jump pack transfer some energy. Once he did that, it worked.

There aren't many models out there that are truly so underpowered they can't kick over a 3.5L. But there are a few. I agree with above, start by listing what you have.

 

JNC hands down. And it fits perfectly behind the rear passenger seat on the driver's side. It'll literally jump any vehicle and only needs to be topped off every 9 months.

 

I've seen 2 catch fire. One wrote a Rav4 off, one burnt a bench.

I no longer keep mine in my truck unless I'm on a road trip.

I think if I live in rural areas I'd do the super capacitor route.

That said, the lithium ones all work fine for V6's. I've never seen a cheap or expensive one struggle with any non-v8 non-diesel.

I currently have a Gooloo but they don't make the model anymore.

 

How old is your jump pack? I had a 10 year old Car Quest jump pack that would only jump start my Tacoma after being unplugged from the wall. If it sat unplugged it was useless. It has since been recycled.

Edit, this one is a newer model than mine.

 

I have a Gooloo that is no longer made. 425 Amps. Seems way too low for the Tacoma, I've only used it to help neighbors. It gets kinda hot when charging.

The JNC looks cool. TexasWhiteIce, which model fits behind rear passenger ?

 

Look at the ones with the highest Peak Amps.

As has already been stated, don’t keep it in your vehicle, and use it appropriately. Ie you can’t just connect it and expect the vehicle to start like you would when jumping against another vehicle. You need to set it appropriately and wait a min to two. What I will say is the Tacoma is the worst (by a very long way) vehicle I have ever owned for jumping, the computer and how the ignition works is a total PITA for jumping as it gets confused and won’t power off totally and constantly tries to circulate specific circuits killing what power you manage to get in the battery. So your jumping problems might be more to do with that Tacoma than the pack.

 

NOCOs are awesome I keep one in every jetski and every vehicle I own. we probably use them 5-8 times a year.

NOCO GB70 2000a for me. Not yet needed for my Tacoma, but used it last week to bump my Mazda CX-5 after its battery sprung a leak. Effortless & cranked with authority. Supposedly offers roughly 40x bumps from a full charge.

 

noco for me but 2 years and never had to use it

 

i do not own one but i am looking at getting one. the comments about not keeping it in the vehicle seem odd. why?

i would keep it in the vehicle particularly on camping, hunting or road trips. should i be concerned?

 

Heat inside of the vehicle during summer?

 

now that the temperature is getting lower i transfer it to my and my wife vehicle until the temp gets to the 80's consistently. during the winter time its safer to keep in your trunk or behind the back seat (tacoma)

Max storage temperature is 122F. I still keep mine in the truck, but I also leave the windows open during the day.

 

I've used a Noco twice in -45C, work great.

 

I have a GooLoo but I don't think they make the model anymore.
