Got board at work and walked put to the truck to check the paint thickness... this is pretty much average across the board using a positector in mils.. 1 mil is pretty much a sheet of paper...

thats actually pretty thick. most use microns to check.7mil is 177 micron. Most cars these days fall in the 90-120 micron so this would mean the paint is thicker then most

What material is the landing gear strut?

The truck is steel, and the tester has to be set for steel.

    Fascinating stuff!

Lots of design and engineering goes to just the landing gear.

Oh yeah and I've seen some wax gurus use that machine to know the thickness of the coat before and after polishing/waxing.
I used to use a machine similar in the machine shop to know my wall thickness on some parts being made.

not something anyone needs unless they are doing some serious rotary buffing with heavy cut compound. even then I dont feel its 100% needed unless your doing some crazy exotics and want to cover yourself on how far you can go. Every car I have had i have Polished them out yearly 2step with cutting compound and then finishing polish with my 21mm throw rupes style orbital. I have never had an issue.
