I just purchased an 01 SR5 V6/Auto extended cab with only 92000 miles. I had been looking for a gen 1 Tacoma with reasonable miles on it for quite a while and finally found this one in Iowa. Truck is white with black wheels, tube steps, over fenders and blacked out badging. Maybe someone can answer a few questions about this Tacoma.
    1. The white paint with everything else black seems to be an appearance theme, but the window sticker does not mention this.
2.Truck has TRD Offroad Package & O/R Suspension....what's in these options.
3.Below radio/cd/cass is a little panel that says Toyota Security with red light. Doesn't seem operational, what should it do? Not mentioned on window sticker, but appears factory.
4.Truck has power windows/door locks. Was remote lock/unlock available in 2001, no remotes came with truck?

Any info would be appreciated. Tim

Sounds like you have the window sticker. If you have the TRD package, you should have an electronic locking rear differential, upgraded suspension and the TRD decals. The 2001's could be built with power locks and no keyless entry, but if you do have the TRD package, it would almost certainly have keyless entry and should indicated remote keyless entry on the window sticker. You can find replacement remotes on eBay and program them yourself.

I keep stating "if you do" above because it is also possible to just purchase the decal and stick it on the side of the bed. A lot of modifications could have been done in 19 years.

The "toyota security" is not factory, but could have been a dealer add. Same thing with the tube steps, black wheels and badges. The black over-fender moldings are factory. The modifications look good on your truck.

Not to rain on your parade, but I hope you ran a CarFax or an Autocheck to confirm the miles are what was represented before paying a premium for low miles. These trucks are easy to pass-off as having a lot less miles than they really do, and just because the odometer is digital doesn't mean it can't be rolled back! Most of these trucks have at least 200K miles on them by now even if they've only been driven 10,000 miles/year, which is way below average.

92000 miles on a 19 year old truck is less than 5000 miles/year, which is extremely odd unless it was purchased from the original owner that happened to be the little old lady from Pasadena. Even if the miles are off by 100K, you have plenty of life left with regular maintenance, and as long as you paid the right price you'll be fine.

    Enjoy your new truck!

rkilpa, thanks for the info. I did have the Carfax for this Tacoma, plus this truck had a history with the Toyota dealer that I purchased it from in Iowa.

-Yes, it has electric locking rear differential. The TRD package included: O/R suspension,P265/70R 16 BF Goodrich tires, rrconsole box, diff lock, aluminum wheels and overfenders…$1360.00 (what is upgraded in an O/R suspension?)

-Window sticker shows: power windows, locks and black power outside mirrors...$660.00 (no mention of remote keyless entry)

-Window sticker shows: SS tube steps by Steel Horse...$419.00 (these tube steps sit so tight to the body, they seem only cosmetic)

I think maybe that one of the previous owners blacked out what wasn't black to achieve his/her desired "look". Would a SR5 with TRD package have a chrome or black grill? Any way, so far I really like this truck and it runs great. Only issue I had to address was a bad clutch fan. Maybe some new coil over shocks for the front soon.

    Thanks, Tim

Those tubes are most definitely cosmetic. Don't confuse them with rock sliders which are bolted/welded to the frame and can support more than the weight of the truck (bashing them into rocks on the trail). What you have is basically just running boards which barely hold the weight of a person.

Your blacked out badges are a custom thing. Factory never did that as far as I know. Your wheels are simply factory SR5 wheels that were painted, too.

lol @ "overfenders"... Fender flairs is the term most people use.

You likely can do some searching and get new keyfobs, but you could also consider a new aftermarket alarm system that will have a LOT more functionality than the 20 year old factory alarm system. But you should be able to do a fair bit of research to make sure you get the right keyfobs, or take it to your dealer and they'll set you up as well. Might cost more, but would be less hassle, too.

As far as the TRD package, the only thing that's actually a benefit at this point is your rear locker. The only other thing that was really upgraded is the shocks (stickers aren't functional, lol). Those 20 year old shocks are more than likely worn out now anyway.

So now that we got all that out of the way, what are your plans with the truck? Is this a daily driver? Weekend warrior adventure vehicle? 100% off-road trail rig? We need to know these things so we can tell you how to spend your money on mods you "need". :D

I am 99% sure that your Taco would have come from the factory with remote keyless entry; My friend's '04 has factory remote keyless entry! My friend's '04 is similar to yours except, besides being three years newer, it...
    • Is red
    • Has a manual transmission
    • Has almost 50K more miles

    Again, very nice truck!

That badge on the door is strange. The one on my 01 is in the 1st gen tacoma font, that looks like a second gen badge? I may be wrong, I'd have to go look at my truck again.

I have an 04 extra cab m/t TRD package with diff-lock. I have power windows and locks but no key fob. I called the dealer to get info on a new one thinking it should have came with a fob and to my surprise it did not.

I actually sold a 2018 Tacoma to make this my daily driver. I liked my 2018, but I've always really liked the drivability and size of the gen 1. I needed to pull a trailer a few years back and had a 2008 Tundra to accomplish that. When the trailering duties ended, I sold the Tundra and bought the 2018 Tacoma. I couldn't find a suitable gen 1 then. When this truck surfaced, I quite happily replaced the 2018 with the 2001. My goal with this 2001 is to make it 100% mechanically sound, make it look as nice as possible and just drive and enjoy it. No plans to "modify" it. I take out all my "truck project energy" on a 71 gmc short bed 4WD that I restored, (can you say gmc on this forum?)

Yes, there is a sunroof, but no mention of it on the original window sticker, so it's not factory. However, it was installed very professionally and does have a factory appearance from both outside and inside the truck. That being said, I would rather it not be there, I'll never use it.

I thought the same thing about the sun roof on my '86 4Runner. But it turned out I used it all the time. I was a factory one. Unless it was raining or really cold, the thing was open. It was removable, too, but I rarely took it off mostly because I didn't have a good spot to store it.

Years ago, I had an '88 Mercury Cougar XR7 that had a pop-up sunroof in it. You could remove the glass, but you had to do it while parked because the glass had to be tilted up 90 degrees in order to disengage the hinges.
So one day, I was cruising down the highway with the glass removed (sitting on the back seat) when a random thunderstorm came out of nowhere. Seriously, I didn't even see any storm clouds until I came over the next rise in the topography and drove right into a microburst.
It was too dangerous to pull onto the shoulder to replace the glass, so on I drove, with massive amounts of rain coming in through the roof. I think that was the last time I ever removed the glass.

Haha, that brings back memories of my buddy in highschool who had a Ramcharger. He had taken the top off, but we got a random rain storm one day, so we all grabbed a tarp and tried to shield ourselves on the way back to his place.
