Just bought a 3rd Gen 2017 TRD off-road. Did I make a mistake?

The 3rd gen is not without its issues. Mine has been a borderline lemon case. Its definitely the most criticized generation of the Tacoma from what I've seen. However some people have them and are without issue or complaint. I wish mine was not so problematic.

To the OP, I don't think you made a mistake. I LOVE my OR! This was my first brand new vehicle and with just over 5k miles on it, I'm always looking back at it in the parking lot or deciding what to do next as far as mods. Make it unique, make it yours, have fun!! Some threads/people can offer lots of help and others are just plain trolls. Stay up to date with service and double check whatever the dealership does. Oh ueah..did I mention to have fun?

No. I love mine and you very likely will as well. Toyota will eventually get any issues sorted, and the 3rd-gens, I suspect, will turn out to be as reliable as the previous two.

You bought the MT so you can go ahead and ignore 75% of the posts here which are people complaining about the auto. The manual is rock solid. It drives and performs much better than the auto.

I love my 17 OR. So far I haven't had any of the issues others have had. My only complaints are they left out the drivers side pull handle and back of the seat map pocket. As for the price. I paid close to 40k but it was pretty loaded up with dealer add-ons. 5" Tubular nerf bars, Tonneau cover, bed mat, roof rack, towing package, etc. Here in NM trucks are king so they don't budge much on price. Especially on the number one seller. I wanted it so I paid it. I'm a happy camper.

It is most criticized tacoma generation ever. But it's new tech. Hope you have a warranty.

Enjoy your 2017. With the manual transmission and the fact it is a 2017 instead of an early 2016 you are far ahead of the game. Enjoy your truck and don't go looking for problems.

It's too late to worry about it now. Go drive and enjoy your new truck. If you have any issues then come on TW and tap into the infinite resources here to help find a fix and go back to enjoying and driving your new truck. You may have issues and you may not. That can be said of any new vehicle purchase.

You bought a 2017 TRD OR with a manual transmission, you'll be fine, enjoy it.

Sure there are still a few known potential issues, just keep them in the back of your mind for if something comes up.

    Welcome to TW!

I worked at a water park when I was 16. On our orientation day, one of the park managers told us these things:

First, he said that in our area, a one day visit to the water park was some families summer vacation. As an adult in this area, now, I see this to be true. The distribution of wealth in this country is very sad.

Second, he told us about the beach. If you go to the beach and have a good time, you might go to work on Monday and tell one person that you had a good time at the beach. If you go to the beach and see a shark, YOU WILL GO TO WORK ON MONDAY AND TELL 10 PEOPLE THAT YOU SAW A SHARK AND HAD A HORRIBLE TIME AT THE BEACH. He related this to a trip to this water park. I assume the ratio on a forum specifically about Tacomas is 50:1. I assume Yelp is 100:1...

I just got a TRD off road last week automatic transmission and have been visiting this site every day since. Right away after reading a number of posts of complaints and negativity i had anxiety thinking i made a big mistake and should have done more research. I began getting paranoid thinking i was hearing the rear howling that some talk about, i also notice the transmission shifting weird. I did think that was weird after i got it and this site just confirmed that.

I think it all depends on what vehicle you are coming from and what you are going to use it for. This truck is light years better than my used chevy cobalt i came from. It was a simple A to B cheap commuter but im a truck guy and finally sacked up and bought something i really wanted and maybe wasnt the most practical. I love my truck! this is the first vehicle ive had that i want to know everything about it and cant stop thinking of what i want to do next, i try to ignore the negative talk on here and just let my own experience determine how i feel about it. Its the best looking mid size truck in my eyes and all the new goodies i have make me feel like i am driving a luxury vehicle, something i havent had. Even one of my buddies who has a chevy 2500 diesel was jealous of all the tech and features my truck has that his doesnt. Its been awesome so far!

Really depends if he got the packages with the truck. Also we don't know if 35k is the OTD price or not. Either way---if he thinks its a good deal, then its a good deal. Congrats OP on the truck. You made the correct choice with the manual trans. Mine has 1200 miles on it and feels better today than the day I picked it up. My only gripe with the truck so far is the minor howl from the diff but I have confidence that toyota will sort that out eventually. I'm patient as long as the howling noise doesn't get too much worse. Enjoy your truck.
