so... just bought a first gen Tacoma that had a 6 Fabtech lift and 33’s. The truck is generally pretty clean, but during the test drive the hood came up and cracked the windshield and destroyed the hood. I said F*ck it and bought the truck.... I forgot to put the truck in 4wd and after buying it I tried to do it on the fly and it refused, it just sounded like it was grinding, you have to be completely stopped for it to go in. After getting it in 4wd the truck has a horrid grinding noise that gets a little better going faster. Any ideas on how to fix it? The transfer case to front end angle isn’t bad, and it has brand new front cv shafts....

How fast were you going when you first tried to put it in 4wd? You should really only be doing a few MPH, preferably not under power or turning.

But that grinding noise could be just about anything, hard to diagnose from here, lol... Can you tell if it's coming from the front or rear?

I would check, no... change the diff and t-case oil and see what that looks like.

Noise is defiantly coming from the front, and it won’t go into 4wd unless completely stopped.

    Shit. Over 20 years old.
    6 inch lift and 33s.
The hood literally got “destroyed” while destroying the windshield first drive.
Then you attempt to engage 4x4 at probably full speed.
    Wow.

Wait. Why did you buy it? I'm assuming you're stuck with it, otherwise, return that shit!

You bought a 4wd truck without checking if the 4wd system actually worked. o_O

Just what I was going to ask, if it has manual hubs the tcase will not engage smoothly if you are moving at all unless the hubs are locked in.

It seems to me like it’s the driveshaft, but you guys seem to want to flame my ass rather then help.

I know what locking hubs are, I had them on my last yota.... and they were not noisy when they were and were not engaged.
