Pull the diff and take it to a tranny shop. You've saved some bucks with diagnosing the issue. But I think the clamshell needs to come open to get that bearing out, best left to the pros. Lots can go wrong if you dont know what your doing.

That diff will need to come out, you can't replace the bearing without resetting the gears as well.

Diff has to come out. The bearing race is going to be junk along with the bearing. Also the front diff is full of metal now.

Like I said, the case had to be split and the bearing has to be pushed out from the inside using an air hammer. But wtf do I know?

Alright Alrighttttt jesus. I pulled both CV joints tonight and started to take off the bolts that hold the diff on, but I realized I may run into a issue, so I thought I would consult you guys first. The 6 inch fabtech lift has a huge bracket in front, and I dont think it will allow diff/axle to drop down to the ground, it looks too tight... What do you guys think?

So, dropping the diff was alot easier then I anticipated, like alotttt... Biggest fuck up I did was when I removed the rear 12mm hex before loosing all of the front bolts first. If you remove the 12mm hex in the back, the differential can now rotate and it was near impossible to loosen the brackets and bolts since it could rotate. After removing all the bolts, I thought it would take me a minimum of 20 minutes of rotating and messing with it to get it out, but to my surprise it only took about 1. After I got under the diff and removed the jack, it literally dropped right out onto my chest (felt great =) ).. Now that the diff is removed we don't really have a battle plan set yet. My dad wants to try to remove the bearing still instead of cracking the clamshell, which I understand, but like many others said, I don't think we can replace the race of the bearing unless we fully take apart the diff.

Like Monte said, there is metal in the diff housing and it will fuck up more shit if not taken care of the right way. Good luck getting the race out with out taking the carrier out.

I still think you should find a JY diff to swap in.

So the code on my door jamb indicates that that I have 4.56’s , although everything I’ve read says they are rare. Just making sure that’s what I have...

^^ And that you will never know unless you check the rear diff. That truck was modified and f-cked up pretty good, so don't believe what paper say. Just check yourself. The last thing you want is to run a different gear on front and back.

jack back of truck up. mark on rear axle, and on both rear tires at 6 o'clock. tape end of piece of string to rear axle. turn both tires together (with a helper) counting full turns, until there's 10 turns of that string around the rear axle and the axle mark is at 6 o'clock again. estimate what % of a turn the rear wheels are at when the wheel marks are lined up and the axle mark is at 6 o'clock, add that fraction to the wheel turn count. 10 / number of turns of rear wheel == final drive ratio.

Or easier jack only one side (leave the other wheel on the ground). Then spin the tire till shaft turns 5 times. Then do the math above (like for 10 turns when both wheels are up).

Of course you have the truck on neutral.

Brought it to a shop and the owner told me that the ring gear is missing a tooth, and also that since the bearing was seized onto the pinion, it messed up the housing and it would be better to just purchase a new one... I can barely find a 4.56 front end anywhere...

You can use car-part.com to find one in a salvage yard if you haven't already tried there.

Might just want to bit the bullet, find one in a different ratio, and have it geared to 4.56

Yeah, I kinda have to get new gears now... Is there anywhere I can purchase just the housing that the pinion is seated in?
