According to Rock Auto the only length difference is about a quarter inch, that isn't enough for normal hubs to fit on there still....

    Weird.

Your new red hub is wrong, the Tacoma aisin hubs always have grey dials while the earlier IFS trucks use red ones. You may be able to use the snap ring on the Tacoma hub though

Thats what I was planning on doing, but I can't find another one of those gray hubs anywhere... The one you linked doesn't sit close enough to the CV to actually catch the teeth.

Then maybe something else is wrong. Are you sure your truck has manual hub knuckles/spindles and not ADD ones?

Also, I wouldn't necessarily rely on the stock photo. That said it looks vaguely what mine did last time I had the hubs off AND they fit as expect. YMMV

I wasn't aware the spindles for the ADD were different.. I thought it would be as simple as swapping the tube from the old axle to the new one....

Something is definitely up, the CV should stick at least 1/8" or so past the hub gear when it is engaged. Here is some more info:

Err I misremembered, the spindle/knuckle are the same but the wheel bearing is different between ADD and manual hubs. Lots of good info here:

This is just so weird and confusing... As soon as I get home i'll do some more inspecting and take some more pictures of the whole assembly.

There are a lot of scams out there but for $20 I can show @skedrc how to avoid them all ;)

So do you think the solution is finding another hub similar to the one I have that is sunken in and can actually go onto the CV?

That would be a step in the right direction, the red dial hubs definitely do not fit as they are for 86-95 IFS pickups and 4 runners.

It would also be worth investigating whether the truck has ADD or manual hub wheel bearings before you throw more money and parts at it.

    Send Wullf a plane ticket.

Alternately is there a 4x4 shop anywhere around you? Some place you can talk to a guy who has experience with Toyota 4x4s?

Internet diagnosis only goes so far. I bet a guy with knowledge can look at your issue and figure out how to correct it. Or tell you what you need to do.

If I call my mechanic and tell him XYZ is wrong, he’d never say google it. He’d say bring it in and I’ll have a look.

You may not be able to see the threaded portion but you should be able to see the brass bushing

If you look at the front of the hub/wheel bearing assembly, the ones for manual hubs have 6 bolts around the axle hole and the ones for ADD do not.
