I did it according to the way many here said to, and this was with the engine not running.
What I don't understand is how come the fluid will come out of the return line (disconnected) and new fluid will flow from the reservoir by only turning the steering wheel and the power steering pump is not turning?
I would think you need the pump operating for the fluid to flow thru the system. All in all I was very pleased with the results and it was easy.

The rack itself is acting like a pump. It being the piston and cylinder.

Do yourself and your truck a favor. Put a magnetic filter (such as a magnefine or similar) on the fluid return inlet to the PS reservoir. I use Purolator/Proline P1320 or PPL1320. And get a second one and put it on the return line from the AT cooler back to the transmission.

    I see.
Ill check the filter out, don't need it for the tranny as mine is manual.

Silly me, I should have taken closer look.

BTW, I too have a 6-speed. It holds a meager 1.9 qt. It also gets hot. And there is no magnet inside to catch iron filings. The only thing that acts like a magnet, sort-of, is a weak piece on the drain plug, and it is not even a neomagnet. IMHO this transmission calls out for rather frequent gear oil changes.

I use Redline MT90 in the gear box and transfer case. Mobile 1 in the differentials.
