I don't know if the folks in Texas were having a bad day when they were building my truck or this is normal. I happened to notice after opening both driver and passenger doors that that back part of the fender that meets the doors is not painted the color of the truck. It looks like some sort of light yellowish primer coat instead. The picture is not the best as I tried to point to the area but as you'll see there's quite a reflection of my hand. IMO if this is normal it sure is a lack of fit and finish to me.

My truck looks the same and it annoys the living shit out of me. It just looks like light overspray coverage on the fender inners. Texas Build as well.

Also inside each front fender is a big hunk of foam. I think on mine the left side
is loose and flops around. #FloppyFoam o_O

So a friend of mine is a supervisor in the paint line. He said a couple of weeks ago there was an accident in the paint line. The first part of the paint process is to dip the vehicle into an electroylis tank so the paint will bind to the vehicle. When there is an issue, they hang a red tag in the upper right of the windshield area. The problem is, it's hard for them to reach it. So, the guy who was monitoring this was trying to put the tag on by standing on an office chair. Apparently this is how they have been doing it for a while. Well, the chair flipped out from under him and he fell onto the truck in such a way that his hand went into the speaker cutout. It's pretty sharp metal there, so yeah, he cut his hand, pretty much in half as his fingers split right down the middle. He said he doesn't know what they did as far as cleanup of that truck, but someone might have a finger hiding in their door! :)

The difference between my 2016 Tacoma (Built in Texas) and our 2016 RAV 4 (Built in Japan) is like night and day. Seriously horrible quality control. It's my 9th Taco. Very well may be my last.

Not that it's right, but I feel the Japanese built vehicles are far superior to those built in the us or anywhere in Europe. There may be differences in specialized low volume vehicles but for the majority I find it hard to beat a Japanese built vehicle.

And in in before the hate from the German car fans.

I have no clue why this area would be painted. It isn't on my Mexican truck or the wife's Enclave.

I'm only just now about to take possession of an American-built Toyota, but I can say that even the Japanese ones aren't the quality that they used to be. The 2003 to 2005 4Runners are good examples. My 2004, like many others, blew a head gasket at 120k. They quietly redesigned the head gasket itself in 2005 to take care of the problem. The Japanese vehicles had the same problems as the American ones with rusty frames, wheel bearings with abnormally short lifespans, etc. Even the low speed grinding/vibration at the front differential that plagued the 2nd generation Tacomas was present on many 4th generation 4Runners built in Japan. My 4Runner even has the RPM related steering wheel vibration that many are experiencing on the new 3rd generation Tacomas.

My 1995 Tacoma as better built than my 2004 4Runner even though both were built in Japan.

On mine you can clearly see it was done by design and not from lack of QC as there is a hard edged line about a quarter inch on the inner fender. Someone asked why this would be painted. In my opinion, if it's visible from the exterior with the door open it should be painted. Having the half assed light over spray look like mine has just looks like crap. I noticed this the first time I washed the truck and it's bugged me since but it clearly must be a way for Toyota to save a few bucks so that's what they are going with.I'd imagine on the Silver and White trucks it doesn't looks so bad but on the darker vehcles and Barcelona and Inferno it just looks like a cheap short cut.

Sorry, but I can't really tell what part of the truck you are pointing to.
