Oh gotcha, I mean yeah mostly. I'll go camping a few times a year and try to find some places to off road some then, but I'm not looking at any serious rocks or anything like that.

Uh oh... now that can of worms is open.

Just go check out the OVtune review/development threads lol. You're not going to get any useful information from ppl who don't run it.

OP, first congrats on the upcoming kiddo!! Secondly, welcome to TW where there is a wealth of knowledge and great free entertainment. Thirdly, get all weather floor mats and rear seat covers. These have been a savior for the truck with pint sized dictators riding back there.

congrats on the new rig. just drive it and enjoy it. if you find the transmission hunts for gears too much or seems to stumble on takeoffs at times, take it to Toyota and ask for the latest TSB to be applied to the ECU. if you don't have any issues, then no need to worry about this. Ovtune wakes the truck up and makes it run incredible and I have run it for some time but I'd get some wheel time before you do anything like that.

    immediate mods I'd do:
    • steps (for wife/kids and to prevent door dings in parking lots). Tyger Star Armor are pretty popular and is what I have. Can be had for <$300 and look tough.
    • bed mat - bed is pretty much useless without that rubber mat back there b/c that plastic is so slippery. ~$120 IIRC
    • weathertech or comparable floor mats / front and back. OEM ones aren't kid approved. enough to keep your wet shoes from soaking your carpet but they won't do much in the case of spills
    • seat covers - can do all sorts of things here depending on your budget and needs. I use Coverking genuine Neoprene - laser cut to be an exact fit to the truck and they look OEM to passengers. waterproof, super easy to clean, don't hold heat/cold like leather.
    • faux pro grill - rid yourself of the chrome grill, can get a chinese knock-off that's of great quality for around $100-150 these days. not OEM but damn close and changes the whole look of the truck.

then you can think about any kind of storage solutions.

We have a 10 month old and my Taco is our go-to trip vehicle and we make it work. Obviously not a ton of space in the cab but with a good rack system and a tonneau you can carry plenty of camping, family, vacation stuff. IMHO racks are huge if you plan to use this as a family hauler though. We have lots of stuff we take though (boards, bikes, boats, paddles, strollers, etc.,)

Last piece of advice - MOD NOW. In a few weeks your truck won't be getting mod money or time so might as well get it ready! Can't tell you how many times I've thought "I'm glad I bought that expensive X before the baby came!" priorities will change, but your mods will stay!

and I'd also agree on the locker. I have an OR with the locker and while I don't off road a ton, I've only used it 3 times in the year and a half I've owned the truck FWIW. and probably didn't "need" it 2 of those times but it made climbing out easier. your 4WD will probably do all you need it to

    Some stuff here and there....
Useful mods I have done that didn't break the bank and helped me.
Swapped the interior lights to led.
Mounted a mag light on the driver seat between the door.
    And a mob mount
Those were the 3 cheapest and mods I used the most.
