There are no truer words spoken.

Great platform for building a dedicated wheeler. Horrible daily driver.

My wife’s car emails me when the washer fluid is low, lol.

As others have said, the entire tank is visible, just look at it

Jeeps are like boats. The two best days are the day you buy it and the day you sell it.

American Bantam, Willys, and Ford were the early innovators of 4X4 before WWII.......if it wasn't for them, who knows what 4X4 would be like today or when it would have been produced.

Nice Willys wagon pictured.....I owned 3 of them over the years - the ORIGINAL SUV!!! Willys had the origianl 4X4 truck also - I think '49 or '50 was the first year for that. Willys (Jeep) is the only company that kept making the 4X4's from day one, unless Ford did, too, but I don't think so.

Could be wrong on any FOREIGN companies and the 4X4 issues - German, Japanese, Russian, etc. Don't really have knowledge on their WWII influences.

But did they have wiper fluid warning lights? If not they were all just another cheap P.O.S and certainly couldn’t be a real off road vehicle

Logical... but old school thinking. Obviously you haven’t met my wife and kids. I taught them all how to care for their vehicles, including when and how to check components which could affect their safety and increase the longevity of their car. Nope... the only compliance they bother with is to “take the car in for scheduled service”, with the occasional phone call to me when an idiot light comes on to inquire what to do. Well, at least they stop driving when a red warning light emerges... so, I’m a firm believer in vehicle technology evolution. Hopefully more and more automated vehicle-to-driver messaging (with automated solutions) will provide resolution for increasing human complacency.

My kids at least pay attention to potential issues with their (paid for by me) vehicles.....they ask me how to fix them!!! Nothing major so far, but at least they are aware - daughter's Jeep: 'Dad, it makes a rattling noise'...son's Ranger PU: 'Dad my passenger door won't always unlock with the key (yesterday)'. Better than: "Dad, there is no oil in the engine and hasn't been for the last 3 months'.

Both of their vehicles are 2011, so not all the 'bells and whistles' on the dash available today.

I also commend their driver's ed classes they had to take. Taught them some basic maintenance - how to check oil, how to change a tire, etc.... In my day it was strictly driving, nothing else. Plus, I always tell them to be aware and pay attention to the vehicle.

Yeah, they used to be called parking lights.
I'd rather have adequate important info such as coolant temp, coolant level, or actual oil pressure displayed than something as trivial as wiper fluid level. Next they'll add an idiot light telling you a headlamp is dead while eliminating the tach.

You call it old school thinking. I call your wife and kids subscribers to new school ignorance. In days gone past you either took care of routine maintenance or you ran out of windshield washer fluid. You checked your oil or as it leaked or burned it you ran low on oil. You checked your tire pressure or wore out your tires prematurely or got stuck with a flat.

Now when you run out of windshield washer fluid you blame the manufacturer for not putting in a sensor and a light and if those same systems fail you swear at that same manufacturer again. If you get a flat it’s the manufactures fault. The conclusion to everything is someone else is to blame for everything. No one individual is responsible for anything anymore.

I am different. I am an industrial mechanic millwright. I see shit break all day every day. I see systems fail. I see outcomes that we can’t figure out how the F did that happen. So in my world shit goes sideways all the time. I see the result (and have to put Humpty Dumpty together again) when people ignore small issues and they destroy themselves to such an extent there is no fixing it to the way it originally was designed. In my world I expect sensors to fail. I expect stuff to not do what it was intended to. I see the difference between someone being on top of their equipment and those who just push buttons all day long.

I don’t accept this new school mentality. It is flawed. Check your dipstick? It will show issues long before a low oil pressure sensor lights up your dash. If it lights up from anything but a sudden loss of oil your motor is already screwed if it was a slow leak or slow oil burning. I have had a windshield washer sensor stick and never come on. Luckily I had an extra jug in my vehicle because I knew I was getting low (it would take a full jug only if completely empty). I check my trailer lights EVERY time I hook up any of my trailers or borrow my neighbors. I back up to my garage door and check my tail lights against the white door for the reflection. I now check every corner of my vehicles when doing the brakes because I once had a stuck caliper that ate a rotor because 3 weeks previous when I checked the rear brakes when doing the front the drivers side was in mint shape. The other was destroyed. The piston fell out and left me stranded. The sensor only identified an issue after I had noticed something was wrong and identified it on my own. Had I not stopped to check my brakes the sensor wouldn’t have saved me before an accident.

Sensors and systems fail. My eyes while not what they used to be are bang on when they do routine checks. Your wife and kids need to get with the old school or take their lives (and finances) in their own hands. Remember with oil change intervals getting longer and longer the amount of time before a mechanic may see the things you ignore is getting longer and longer. Why is it I see more ball joint failures in the last 10 years compared to the first 36 years of my life? Lack of vehicle inspections and lack of maintenance.
