I was also wondering why the wheel well approach wasn’t taken.

Everyone keeps saying how easy it is if you.... and all you need to do is.... But here's an additional catch. The brake line mount is welded on the '99 Taco, 3.4L V6, Auto, 4x4 (my truck), so I CAN'T just unbolt it & move it out of the way as in Kwickvette's pictures. This seems to prevent the wheel-well approach. Currently flummoxed.

Three months have passed. I would hope the starter repair has been completed by now, and the truck is cranky once again.

I just reinstalled the damn thing today by bringing it back in up and over the steering rack. If you can get it via the wheel well, cool all the more power to you. If not just take it in over the steering rack (provided the sway bar is out of there). Longest part of reinstall was getting the bolts back in. Oh and for the record, 5VZFE, AT & 4WD.

Some of these “other than OEM” brand starters are simply larger. I would suggest buying OEM Densa’s. Although my truck is a later 2003, the Densa doesn’t have as high a profile.

Doesn't toyota make a cold package that includes a starter that's larger in design too?

The cold weather manual starter is just the Automatic starter which is longer .

I have seen side by side pictures floating around on line.

I know there are 2 different starters rated at different output without looking I don`t remember the numbers.

It has been several years things may have changed.
