Well it looks like I should probably just get another motor. Took down the plate in the oil pan and found some not pretties. I was also wrong about the shavings before, they are metal and seem to be from the cylinder wall. Odd part is that it seems to be from a different cylinder(was on the middle of the crank) than the one the spark plugs shot out of (passenger back).

If you look towards the back you can kinda a shaving being the connecting rod. Rod kinda looks cracked in the picture, don't remember seeing that.

Time for a new block...I suggest getting the JIS engine, but that is my opinion.

No title yet, I heard the lost titles take 4-6 weeks so it may be sitting with me antsy to work on it for a while :(

Someone locally is selling a complete motor with 268k on it for $500. Haven't checked out any of the junk yards yet so not sure how well priced that is. He says it is still in the truck so I can drive it to see how it runs, he plans to put one with 56k miles in his. Your thoughts?

268,000 is a lot. Not clue how the motor has been treated or maintained. I would pass. You can find much lower mileages engines in probably better shape than that one. If you're going to spend money might as well buy from a salvage yard or new. The reason I say this is even pull a part here gives a 45 day warranty on the motor already and you can purchase a year for 100.00 more. So for a years warranty if it died on the 366th day. That 100.00 more than paid for itself.

What engine do you have now. I'll check my local pull a part and see what they would sell you one for.

I can appreciate that at least you can see/hear/drive to evaluate but thats alot of miles , I think if you look around a bit & for a couple hundred more you can find one with at least half that mileage , although the one for $500 may still be sound (after doing comp. test) but all the other goodies hanging off it might be at the end of shelf life.. Won't know til you check it out tho'...

I have the 3.4 V6. I'm not sure how set the 500 price is but that is a lot of miles. The truck I'm wanting to put it in has 293k so it's hard justify putting something with such similar miles when this one died. I still haven't looked at my local yards, I will do that tomorrow to get a better comparison.

Your girlfriend like sparky things? Tell her you have something sparky that was made under high temperature and pressure then give her the shavings. On second thought, that's a bad idea.
I agree about passing on that motor. If you can get the title, get a rebuilt motor. Sure it will cost more, but your cost/mile ratio will be better in the end if you take care of it.

If he is pulling the motor because it is worn out, then think of it as nothing more than a rebuildable core...and $500 seems high for that.

268k miles wouldn't scare me on a toyota engine as long as it has been maintained but better deals are out there. I paid $1200 + $200 shipping for a complete 2003 3.4L with only 69k miles out of a totaled prerunner from a salvage yard. But it took me a while to find a low mileage one. Took a TW members advice and found it on ebay.

When I was shopping for a 2.7, lots of reman's on ebay for around 1200 IIRC. I ended up going the JY online search route, shockingly *everyerone* had a 2.7 8 port with less than 70k miles on it for about $1600 shipped and no worse than a grade B. And shockingly, lies  The first one I got in had no compression on 2 cylinders and was actually labeled as parts only, grade D. So basically 1600 for a hopefully rebuildable core. But man was it clean and didn't look powerwashed, it looked like a low miles engine.

But it was according to the girl on the phone, an oversight. A couple months later I had a runner and could start putting the engine back in. It did not look like a clean low miles engine, every gasket was leaking. It does run fairly well though. In retrospect I'd have gone the reman'd route. The only good part about the jy engine is it came with various brackets and other bits still attached so I could pick and choose which ones went back in the truck. So lesson learned, if I can't inspect it beforehand, expect junk on a pallet.

Local junk yards were a bust. They kept saying "No" or "We wouldn't have anything like that". Tacomas are rare in my area so it doesn't really surprise me.

Just an update for you guys. Title is in hand now so working can begin. When I went to pick up the title I heard that the previous owner drove the truck for a while after it shot out the spark plug... since it was the spark plug with the coil over then 2 cylinders won't spark so I'm sure that's how the engine seized.

There is no freeing this one and having her run again. Too much metal in the oil pan so my guess is that the piston made itself a groove into the cylinder wall and is stuck on the lip.

It would be about a 7 hour drive or so for me to southeast Kentucky so it would have to be one hell of a deal. I live at the tippy top of Indiana.
