I loved my "88 Toyota 4X4. That truck was a workhorse. Rust was slowly winning the battle though. So when Uncle Obama offered me $4500, how could I refuse?:D

Sorry about that. I'm still learning how this Forum works. Anyway, the "88 had 150K and wasn't going to see 200. The Feds listed the GPM at 16 though I ussually got close to 20GPM. To get the 5GPM difference and secure the full $4500 I bought a 2WD, automatic with a regular cab and bed. I'm retired now so having a vehicle to get to work no matter what the weather is no longer applys. I wonder how long it will be before I say "DAMN! Should have got the 4 wheel Drive?" So far so good.

Welcome to tw. I have basically same model and felt kinda like i was in a lowrider at 1st . Most of my rides are 4wd, but youll love the extra cab room if you got out of an 88 reg cab. I been in mine 2yrs , still love it

Apparently, I just got under the wire. The Clunkers Program just got cancelled. The last time I bought a new vehicle was in 1976. I had always told my kids, DON't buy a new car, buy a used one. New cars lose their value as soon as you drive them off the lot. I had to eat my own words. So now I tell them, I only buy a new vehicle every 32 years. My smart ass Son looked at me with a straight face and said "MMMM....So I guess this is it then, eh Dad?" I think I'll redo my Will.

My '94 didn't qualify as a clunker, so I just traded it for my new access cab 2wd with AT, and I am pretty happy with it, but my next one will either be a Prerunner or a 4x4.

I also got in on the clunkers deal with my 1990 F-150 running on 5 cylinders! I was going to wait until my youngest son got out of college in 2 years to get a new truck, but couldn't pass on getting $3500 for my $200 truck! I thought I would get the full $4500, but my new 2009 Tacoma Double Cab was a class 1 & my Ford was a class 2. This is my 1st new truck ever & I'm loving it! My oldest son drove mine & went out the next week & bought him one!

If everybody took the advice you gave your kids ( which nobody can deny ) , the used cars would disappear (if nobody bought new). Used cars can save you money but they also can cause many headaches. There is the comfort of "not going to get stranded" in a new vehicle not to mention being under full warranty. I shopped used Tacomas before I bought a new one last month and the prices of a used one were way up there. It made sense to me to buy new because of the little price difference. One nice part is knowing this vehicle is going to hold its value well.
