In about 12 years, you're insurance payments will add up to the approximate price of a new Tacoma.

your price is way high because you have purchased optional with ICBC. I have same 43% discount and only purchase basic insurance from ICBC ($663) . For optional I go with bellair direct , comprehensive, collision, third party 2.8 million, under insurance 2 million, road side assist and windshield repair...all for $464. So my total $1127/year. ICBC is a ripoff when it comes to optional. basic all BC drivers have to buy with them because they have the manopoly.

My insurance went down significantly going from my 15 Accord to my 12 Taco, and obviously the Taco is worth more. My first thought was that in a catastrophic accident the bigger and higher vehicle tends to do better relative to a sedan, maybe that's all it is. If you line up all the safety features and available discounts both vehicles pretty much have the same. Just like you I got a pleasant surprise.

Under 25 is usually much more expensive all else being equal. In two years the accident is hopefully old enough to drop off, plus the better rate for being older. You should see a nice drop in premium.

It's hard to beat USAA rates, been with them for years and had nothing but good experiences in two minor fender benders, one at fault and one not. I got a Geico quote once and (at least in NC) they look at 5 years as opposed to 3 (USAA), and surcharge for really stupid stuff like a non-moving equipment violation (tail light). Guy quoted me something 50% above my current rate and then asked me when I'd like it to be effective. Seriously dude? NC is a weird state for auto insurance though, much is controlled/set by the state gov'.

State Farm has Safe Drive program. You put a little Bluetooth dongle in your vehicle and connects to your cell phone. Regardless of your driving you get a discount. I have it in all three of my vehicles.

Does that mean you have to stick to the speed limit? If I did I'd get run over in some places. What constitutes "safe driving"?

That's a good point I forgot to mention. Even just doing the program you automatically get 5% off, and your rates cannot go up.

I honestly don't know how the liberty mutual dongle transmitted data, but I could go to a webpage and see my in program results (including times and dates for those events I mentioned). There was no setup with an app or anything (my guess is it transmitted via opportunistic open wifi).

Anyone know if GAP insurance helps at all? I just got the truck and haven’t insured it yet. Wondering if having GAP helps at all.

Gap insurance would definitely be handy if you're upside down. Meaning, you bought a new truck, financed it all, drove it off the lot and now you owe much more than it's worth. Other than that, I don't personally think it's useful. And with the upside down situation it would make sense to drop it once you'd paid the loan down close to the value of the vehicle.

Probably would’ve helped, kid was in the left lane crossed middle and the right lane I was in to get in a lane to merge onto the interstate. I was going 45 in a 50 because late at night, rain, and Jeep. Light turned yellow no way I could stop for it and all the sudden as I’m about to go through the light he pops back over at a dead stop in front of me at a yellow I had time to say shit once and tap my brakes before I ran into him... I tried to explain to the cop that to get how far ahead of me he was to slow down in the merge lane then come back over at a full stop he was easily doing 60+ and the cop agreed, but said it’s FL nothing you can do.

Nope, you can go over the speed limit. I think 80 mph alerts the app you are excessive speeding but it doesn't do anything. You still get a discount.

I wonder what the company's 'gain' is then to have you use the dongle. Maybe it's just psychology...you know you're being monitored so you drive more safely. A cynic's view. There must be something more concrete though.

I'm not entirely sure myself. Maybe they use the data to figure out what to charge for rates in the future for their clients and the data somehow tells them who is more likely to get into car accidents ???

But the discount I get is pretty good and helps a lot considering I insure three vehicles. According to the safe drive app I'm saving nearly $800 a year.

i have had USAA for over 46 years and live in California.....a Lexus GS-350, ES-350, My Taco and we pay less than 1000 annual....Plus we get yearly dividend in December and February which reduces it even more .....can't go wrong with them....

that how they determine your driving habits and then your rates...I think it is a pos device and doesn't allow you to be alone...a spy device

3M liability....wow!! try 500/300 and watch it drop like a rock.....also if you have medical at work, you should drop the medical on car insurance because your work insurance is primary......auto medical only pays after your primary stops....
