My '18 Limited has about 5k miles on it. It had the similar characteristics that so many on here have noticed. 1) When cruising at slower mph(around 20-40) no acceleration upon gradually pushing on the accelerator then all the sudden downshifting hard a couple gears then really taking off. 2) Constantly shifting on the interstate when cruising at highway speeds, especially when bucking even the slightest headwind or going up a slight grade like an overpass or the like. 3) Hard sift between like 1st and 2nd when taking off from a stop. 4) always shifting to that 6th gear as fast as it can...even like at 30mph on a city street it would run at like 900rpm. I've often felt this truck has a powerband like a 2-stroke motocross bike....nothing at all and then all the power at once when it 'gets up on the pipe'. Anybody ever made that comparison before?

Anyway...NOW the results after the TSB. My ride to and from the dealer is about 30 miles each way, mixed with about 10 miles of city/highway and 20 miles of interstate driving. I made a mental note of all the things it was doing on the way. And that includes all the things listed above. On the way home...ALL of these issues seemed to be fixed. AND on the way there my trip mpg was 16.2. On the way home it was 18.9. It seems to shift much more uniformly when taking off from a dead stop. And the best thing was it didn't seem to wanna see how fast it could get to that 6th gear like always before.

I am beyond thrilled with the outcome!

2nd full day after getting the TSB done. I had about an hour trip on I-57 in Southern Illinois. Can't believe the difference in gas mileage and the way the truck drives! This was an hour in to my trip, (adaptive)cruise set at 80, and traffic was heavy with it being close to Christmas so it was constantly slowing down and the getting back up to speed, hilly with several overpasses, etc... Before the TSB the best this would do was about 17.5. Again, if you haven't gotten this done yet, I HIGHLY recommend!

Hello SteelerJim, I am new to TW and Iv'e been reading about these TSB's. Very knew to this and honestly not sure exactly what it is. Sounds like a tune you get done at the dealership. Is this accurate? If so how do you get this done? Just show up to the service department and tell them you want the TSB 0062-18 tune? Or is it something you purchase at home and download onto your computer then just plug your laptop into your truck and download the software? Are these tunes only for automatic transmissions or do they have tunes for manual transmissions as well? Thanks for your help!

It's basically a newer "Tune" or more accurately an update from Toyota themselves.

You show up, describe the simptoms given by the TSB pdf document and hope the system sees the update as available for your truck.

You go to The dealership to get the TSB done. It should be done free of charge.

TSBs are only recommended by the dealership if you have particular symptoms that the TSB is intended to fix. I'm not sure what happens if you just show up and say, I want the TSB. Like recalls, they are done for free. Unlike recalls they are not applied to all vehicles. You have to show up and have the problem the TSB addresses. Like I said, not sure what happens if you just ask for it to be applied. But if you have similar symptoms to the OPs should be easy. Just tell the dealership what happened and say you believe this TSB would be appropriate.

I heard about it on this forum. Googled and researched it a bit, then I made my appointment for the 5k free maintenance and told them I wanted it done while I was there. MY dealer wasn't aware of it till I told him. He even googled it while I was there to see what it was about. It's just a re-flash to your truck's ECU as I understand it. But it made a world of difference in my truck's performance. With yours being a manual, I'm not sure about if it would help your truck or not. Maybe someone will chime in on this thread that can tell ya. OR try searching for 'manual transmission tsb' in the thread search bar.

I didn't see a change when i got it done this month. However my truck does have wheel and tires + lift. If i cruise at 80 on a perfectly flat stretch of highway it will not go into 6th. Had the same issues before i got the TSB done. If i put it into S and go into 6th it will work for the most part but always wants to stay in 5th. I'm just living with the fact i will never have decent gas mileage and the transmission will never shift right.

I was not charged for it... And yes, I 'just showed up' to make my service appointment and told them I wanted it. And they did it when they completed my 1st free maintenance.

There is a Factory TSB that does have an application for Manuals, if you are wanting an Aftermarket Tune then check out OV Tune.

Sounds like you need to change your gears. If your tires are a much larger than stock diameter, you have effectively made your gears higher ( numerically lower).

Since you control when and where you shift on a manual, what exactly does the tune do to a manual?

Is it adjusting the pedal sensitivity or?

They aren't much larger. 265/75/r16. Maybe an inch taller if that. Stock is a 265/70/r16 it's damn near the same tire lol .

I know my setup has changed in regards to weight. Either way I am still happy with it. At least it doesn't have some of the previous symptoms it did before .

I have had my 16 Tacoma TRD sport now for about three weeks. Today was the first day I have actually driven on the highway for more than 15 minutes. I drove from Indianapolis up 65 to Valparaiso. Set cruise at 79 mph. If you’re not familiar with this area of the country....it’s relatively flat. My average mpg over the 134 miles was 13.8 mpg!!! WTH? I kept looking at the tach and it was at 3500 most of the time. Why? I’m pretty sure it was in 4th gear. I turned off the cruise control and put the shifter in sport mode and tried changing gears. I could get it to go into 5th and tach stopped to about 2100 but I could not get it to go into 6th. Dash showed it was in 6th but tach never dropped except for one time. Tach dropped to 1800 but as soon as I stepped on the accelerator, it felt like it shifted back to 5th and tach jumped to 2500. I don’t understand what is going on. Would this TSB fix this?

Go to your dealer and tell him exactly how it drove and tell them you think the TSB 0062-18 would fix it. I had a lot of the similar symptoms you experienced. The TSB has made a night and day difference to my fuel economy and just how it performs in general. Keep us posted...

I did print off the TSB 0062-18 pdf and planned on taking it to the dealer on Thursday for my appointment. I had made an appointment yesterday because I want them to check the transmission fluid level. I am experiencing slow to shift to drive from park in the mornings. I have a drive along scheduled and then hopefully a resolution to the problems.

You guys all need OVTune. I averaged 19.2mpg today over 140 miles. My truck has 32” tires and weighs 6000lbs

I looked into OVTune. It looks awesome but I can’t afford it right now. I also don’t feel I should have to pay for that to get average fuel economy.
