so I have an 05 prerunner V6 and I just hit 140,000 miles. I have had trouble with the engine starting and the battery was recently replaced. Spark plugs were done at about 80,000 miles so I’m guessing that could be the issue.

While I’m in the shop do you reccomend any other services?

I don’t think the fuel filter has ever been changed, so maybe I’ll do that and the plugs.

I have the original red Toyota coolant in there, maybe time for a flush or replacement?

    As far as other services:

05s and up don't have fuel filters. Filtering takes place in the fuel pump, which is self cleaning, located in the gas tank.

    Coolant flush
    Transmission flush
    Power steering flush
    Brake lines flush
    Clutch line flush, if applicable
    Grease the drive shaft zerks
    Rear differential fluid
    Air filter
    Cabin filter

You should have done all of this by 100k miles. Some of these fluids are said to be Toyota specific, so make sure whoever changes them knows what they're doing, although some people choose to use universal fluids anyway. The only Toyota specific fluid I use is coolant and it's aftermarket made for Toyota, sold at pep boys. I think it has a grey label and is a pink fluid or maybe it was red.

If I had an auto transmission, I'd probably use Toyota fluid there too.

Those in tank fuel filters are notorious for clogging or becoming partially clogged.

I’m definately getting a little bit sluggish acceleration but I always run 87 fuel. I saw somewhere where the v6 uses premium

If you have the 4.0 then you should replace those plugs again. I believe its recomended every 30k. I had stuttering on start up at about 85k with iridium plugs and those are recomended for 100k. Took them out and found the gaps had grown way out of spec. Put new ones in and it was much better.

The v6 only requires premium when supercharged. changing your octane will not make your truck less sluggish. Its something else.

What's it doing when it starts? Slow crank? Rough crank? Spuddering? Shuts off as if running out of fuel? Strong crank but long to start?

Nothing wrong with Toyota’s WS transmission fluid. But it's very pricey and depending on your location....could be inconvenient to get to a dealer.

An excellent substitute for WS is Valvoline MaxLife ATF. It's great for older transmissions and is completely compatible with WS.

There's some debate on whether flushing an older high mileage tranny is a good idea. You can Google that and decide for yourself.

But I would do at least 2 if not 3 or 4 drain and fills about a week apart. This will net you enough new fluid to benefit. There are excellent write ups around here.

It gives the crank then it will die before turning over. Sometimes it won’t turn over at all, which is weird which makes it seem like a loose connection. Who knows, gonna do as many preventative maintenance things as possible to get the truck up to 200,000 without another shop visit

If the pulleys are original they’re probably due for replacement as well. They’re pretty cheap though.

Since when have they become notorious for being problematic? Truth is, with using a plastic tank instead of metal with rust and fuel stations using filters at the pumps, there shouldn’t be that much dirt in the fuel to begin with.

Yeah the 2.7 is iridium and the 4.0 are regular from the factory. I only have iridiums for the supercharger kit. I def drive it hard and high in the rpm range but im willing to wager that has an effect on longevity.

Check out the perfomance section of TW youll see it there. Mine was also partially clogged when i removed it at 60k. Again its a well know issue.

I guess I wouldn’t call that notorious, given how few are affected. I would consider the frames rotting notorious.

Guess it really depends on who you are talking to. But yes i would say the frame issue is far more prevelant than almost any other issue. At least where i am.

I dropped the tank. It has a couple straps holding it on and a couple hoses connected. It took about 45min using a jack and stands with hand tools.

I've not had an issue with mine. It's OEM at 13 years and 156k miles. I haven't read any threads on here about them, but I don't spend that much time on here.
