Workman likes how some people who drive manual transmissions feel like they are more manly because of it. Workman feels like driving a stick takes no more skill than driving an auto. Workman's grandma drives an 88 F150 with a 4 speed and shes pushing 91.

If the 6 speed was bullet proof and did not have so many negative reviews, Workman would have got one BTW.

While it may be true that the manual is faster getting up to speed than the auto, Workman bought his truck to take him places off road and around town. Speed did not equate into his decision on buying a Tacoma.

iroh believes driving the auto takes more skill than the manual because the only autos he's driven in the past 10 years have belonged to other people, and he faces difficulty predicting transmission shifting logic at all times and refuses to delegate the driving experience and safety of the passengers to a slab of silicon.

All these manual versus auto threads end up pissing matches

Who cares , drive what you want , a manual doesn't make you a more or less skilled driver

True: I never worry about having a dead battery. I'd just get a couple poeple to push me.

I've owned 6 vehicles 5 out of 6 where manual. That 1 automatic, the tranny went out. I like being in a solid gear! Pulling a camp trailer in my 6speed 2009 2nd gen no prob. Pulling that same trailer in my last automatic 2005 2nd gen sucked. Tranny got way to hot and slipped and wouldn't stop shifting. :My personal preference:

Well, that is technically true. Someone who is a good enough driver to operate a manual can certainly drive an automatic, so the fact of what you happen to be driving doesn't equate to being a better or worse driver... however, someone who is *such* a bad driver that they can't drive a manual, may be able to drive an automatic.

A manual doesn't make you a better driver, it simply ensures that you are at least good enough to drive one.

Workman is really weird, but makes excellent points.
And in fact, if I was looking at 6-cyl, I might have picked automatic as well. The 5-speed manual is an excellent unit. At least after you have the slipping POS LUK clutch TSB'd out of it in exchange for AISIN.

Everyone should learn how to drive a manual^

doesn't mean you have to have the daily hassle though

I like manuals, I own one, I will own another, but if someone prefers an auto I can completely understand the preference.

I still think everyone should know how/be prepared to drive a manual though

I'm not disagreeing with you. You are right. It does not make you a better driver. It simply proves that you are a better driver than some, who happen to be terrible drivers.

I would also like to add that having the *skill* to drive a manual does make you a better driver than you would be without that skill.

    IDK

I would say the only difference is you have learned how to shift manually .

What if you could only drive 3 on the tree and not a regular 4 or 5 speed manual ? Who's the better driver there ?

From my experience, no big difference. I can also drive 3 on the tree, having already been proficient with floor shift, there really wasn't any difficulty adjusting to it.

Mind explaining what your point is? Tree or floor shift manual takes the same extra skills that automatic doesn't take. More skill = more skill. No?

My point is that you drive an automatic, but you have the necessary skill to drive a manual, so you are a more skilled = better driver than, say, whippersnapper.

    Just kidding whip ;)
