Don't ever coast in neutral with an Auto. Manual is fine but i don't think using up the trannie is really worth it.

our engines shut down some cylinders when trans braking, the past weekend i drove back and through the mountains and would shift my 4.0 into 3rd while going down the mountains... and even tho the rpms would be close to 3k and ended up getting 21 mpgs

Well technically it does use fuel, since you are revving. But i only use soft downshifting. Letting the rpm go really down so i can downshift to the lower speed. Using downshifting as breaking is not really smart. I know it has been said millions of times, but breaks are cheaper than trannies.

Not some. It shuts the Fuel injectors off when no throttle is given, and the engine is coasting in gear. Fuel injectors turn back on at 1200 rpm.

LOL I knew about that. Thanks for refreshing my memory. I heard it on Opie & Anthony and they were making fun of the hyper-milers. One of the things they did was to shut off the engine if they knew they had to wait 10 seconds or more like at a red light.

Those guys are driving hybrids. The engines should shut off anyway
One thing that bugs me about hybrids. How do you "warm up" a hybrid in the cold so the heat is ready when you are ready to go? Off topic, I know. Sorry

If he doesn’t mind taking a bit longer to get to his destination then I don't see why he shouldn’t try to get more mileage out of a tank. He’s still drives the truck he wants and he’s still getting to the place he wants to go. It’s not like he’s refusing to haul stuff in this bed to save on gas. I really don’t see your logic. A 30% increase is pretty substantial and would mean $50 a month for me.

Wrong, if the engine used "no" fuel it would be off. Even in idle it uses fuel, even going down hill, even in neutral.

sigh when you are coasting in gear the wheels spinning drives the engine if the engine rpm is above 1200rpm then the fuel to the engine is stopped via the injectors. When the vehicle slows enough and the engine rpm drops below 1200 signal to the injectors is continued and the engine uses fuel. With the automatic transmission it downshift as the rpm drops till it hits second then it won't downshift to 1st while coasting its here that once rpm drops to 1200 the engine begins to use fuel again.
