Just made a deal to trade my 16 auto for a 17 manual.

The deal i made was for me to pay $1500 difference plus fees. I am going from a quicksand trd off-road 4x4 long box auto with 3500 miles to a 2017 quicksand trd off-road 4x4 short box with a manual. Both of these trucks have the towing package but not the tech package. Ive had my current truck for about 11 months so I'm very happy not to lose much on it. Im going to miss the long bed, but I've been very unhappy with the transmission just like everyone else. It's been a thorn in my side ever since i brought it home. I should have noticed this on the test drive but for whatever reason I did not. The truck I ordered tonight will take about 6 weeks to arrive according to the dealer. If you are unhappy with your 3RD gen auto this proves you can trade out of it with a minimal loss.

I (and many others here) feel your pain. Unfortunately for me a manual trans is a non-starter. I do have a vehicle already with a MT and my previous tacoma was MT.

That's not bad at all. Enjoy your '17! From a bit of reading around here, seems like 2nd gen 5AT > 6MT, but 3rd gen 6MT > 6AT.

    Nice work!

Mine was going to be about 4k loss going from a fully loaded access cab off road to a full base model 4 door off road.

I hated the auto enough to get to the signing process. Then realized how stupid of a deal that was and kept my pos.

Here was their first offer. I was able to talk the down to $1500 and I was happy with that.

I'm not holding my breath on their 6 week guess. They said the same thing when I ordered my current truck and it took 11 weeks. I'm fine with however long it takes.

Toyota is weird about Orders, I wanted the P&T Package and when that was selected it was limited to only 2 colors, Quicksand and MGM.

My wife rarely drives my truck but she has no clue how to drive a stick so that may pose a problem someday. I don't care though...this 6 spd auto gives me so much heat burn.

A back step for when I get older, Carhartt seatcovers, 4Runner wheels, Topper, and "tats all folks"! --for now!!
If you were doing it on their public build site, I can relate, as that site was limiting my choices as well -- The dealer can over-ride this erroneous crap from the place they can get to.

I did not know that was the case, I just chose MGM and called it a day.

That's awesome that you were able to make the switch for minimal difference. I originally went looking at 2017 Tacoma's, but the dealership I went to said I couldn't order one (lie! My buddy on here ordered his!). Ultimately I started looking at used because when I did sit in the 2017, the seating position felt weird. My leg kept hitting the bottom of the steering wheel when I got in and out and I couldn't adjust the steering wheel up higher. I don't have that weird feeling at all in my 2015 I ended up getting.

I would hate myself more knowing I gave Toyota and the dealership another $4k of my money. I think you made the good call.

Now, do what I have been doing and hold them accountable for the issues. I really need to add up the warranty $$$ spent on parts and labor for my brand new truck. It's going to be very expensive for them when I am done (or I will have the truck I wanted originally).

3,500 miles in 11 months? Doesn't sound like you drove it enough for the transmission to learn your driving habit ha ha

Wife can't drive your new truck and that may be a problem...

    Hmmmmm.....

Most guys don't want their wife driving their new truck. :D

    Quick true story:

When my wife was working she was provided a company car.

We stepped out of the house one day and there was a huge smear of paint across the front bumper.

    Me: What did you do?

Her: I can't believe you automatically assume that I did something wrong. Did you think that possibly it wasn't my fault?

Me: I'm sorry. So what happened?

Her: I ran into a Deputy Sheriff. But I didn't get a ticket so it must not have been my fault!

Yeah I'm not sure how long the learning phase takes. I did the whole TSB and fluid check and while that did help it still was not great. My biggest complaint has to do with the cruise control. I want to set the cruise somewhere between 75 and 80 and you just can't do that with this truck. Shifts from 4th to 5th to 6th way too often for my liking. I live in a very flat area too.
