Just picked up an '86 and have some questions

I bought an '86 pickup a few weeks back. Came up a few minutes from my house on craigslist. Only 90k miles and one owner. Anyways he didn't see It for what it was and neglected a few small cosmetic things here and there and as I'm trying to bring it back to glory I realize I know little about these old pickups.

What was the original seat material on these was it a cloth/fabric or vinyl? It is vinyl right now which I believe to be original but showing wear on driver side. Im going to have it redone but as much as I'd like to keep it original I think I'd prefer cloth.

The dash is also cracking which seems to be pretty common, on Ebay there is some replacements but it is offered in light brown, medium brown, and dark brown, is there anyway to definitively tell which shade of brown I have?

The heater only works on two highest settings, am I right to assume the resistor needs to be replaced?

The floor is some sort of vinyl material instead of carpet, is this an original option?

The 22r runs amazing, very quiet and smooth. Only thing I notice is the coolant temp gauge only gets up to about 1/4 of the way even on longer drives, is this normal, or maybe a stuck open thermostat?

What is the button on left side of dash for (attached pic) 20200123_092200.jpg

And a pic of the truck itself

very nice truck! the only thing i know for sure is that the temp gauge is a stuck open thermo. i had the same on my pickup, got it replaced. but be advised, the gauge will move up to the center once fully warmed up and it will slightly fluctuate from center to about 1/3 from cold. it still bugs me that it can't stay steady still like newer vehicles, but oh well, no issues and runs like a top. (mine is 22re)

Sweet truck! I use to have an 88’, wish I never sold it.

if I’m not mistaken, the worn out button is the “clutch start cancel”

Great find:thumbsup: Looks like the old DLX (?) model which had vinyl floors and vinyl bench seats. I believe the comment about the clutch cancel switch is correct and yes your heater resistor most likely needs replaced. From what I remember replacing the resistor is not a hard job and should give you three fan speeds again. Enjoy your truck.

The base model was vinyl floor and bench seat. The DLX got you carpet and the cloth 60/40 split bench with an arm rest in the middle, at least in an XtraCab. The highest spec back then was SR5 which got bucket seats, air conditioning and some of that really fancy stuff.

Makes sense, I was thinking the base model was the DLX. My brother had a basic model and it was so basic it didn't even have a radio or power steering.

My truck was a 1991 and that year DLX got you an AM/FM radio and being 4WD it got power steering (it was still an option on 2WD) but still had crank windows and no air conditioning.

I guess A/C was optional on DLX. My truck was 22R-E and lacked most options (I bought it used in 1999) so actually not 100% sure. I ended up adding aftermarket R134a kit from Arizona Mobile Air. It worked OK but sapped a ton of power from that poor overworked engine.

Hahaha yeah it doesn't have a bunch of extra power to give that's for sure.

There were good things about the 22R-E but the 2RZ and 3RZ are in almost every way better engines. If I hadn't been dumb and sold the truck I'd totally have done a swap on it.

My old '81 a 22R (carb) and 3.90 gears, which was typical for the 5 speed SR5 models. My '87 4Runner SR5 came with the 22RE, a 5 speed, and 4.10 gears. I felt the 22RE was a great upgrade over the 22R.

Realized no one answered this. You can find your paint and interior codes on the door sill or by looking up the VIN, it's the C/TR followed by codes. The C is the exterior color code and the TR stands for trim or interior color.

I think in 1986 the paint code for that color is 557, which is called creme or light yellow depending on who you ask. It might be 4E7, which is ivory.

Not sure about interiors though, probably something like FA40.

You might get lucky and the Toyota VIN checker will give you a hint as to light, medium or dark. But going back that far it's not going to be easy. Toyota probably called it medium. My 1991 had medium gray with other options that year being medium blue, red (no medium) or brown (also no mention of medium).
