So i just bought a 1005 Tacoma, I have never owned a Toyota before, I have owned the only one car ever and that was a 2002 VW Jetta 1.9L TDi. The Tacoma has 102k on it currently and I was wondering what should I be looking out for with these cars, also what should my check list be as far as maintenance checks?

    Welcome from Houston.

There is an owner's manual in the glove box, but if there isn't you should check for frame rust first off. Second it says you have a base reg cab, and I'm not sure but you might need to replace the spark plugs and the enginge coolant. It might be different than the 4.0 but I'm not 100% sure.

    Good luck.

Sure did...221k miles, its the Turbo Diesel model, sadly when I was younger I drove that thing into the dirt. I got the Tacoma so I have a car I can use as daily driver while I slowly piece the Emerald Monster back together. At 55mpg it was very hard to let that thing go.

Congrats on your purchase! The first thing I would do is inspect the frame and see if there is any rust through. Toyota did a Limited Service Campaign on 05 through 08 frames on the Tacomas that were operated in certain states. NY qualifies if that's where you are. You can go on the Toyota Customer site and register with the VIN of your truck and you will be able to see the LSC and the details if it qualifies. It ends 03//31/2016 so you could look and see and if it doesn't look bad, put off the frame inspection at the dealership until closer to the end date of the LSC. Because if you take it in and it doesn't pass, they deem it unsafe and won't let you drive it off the lot. They'll give you a loaner and they will replace the frame on your truck. A great deal, but you often have to buy ancillary parts that you will probably want to replace before they put it back together, shocks, bushings, etc. I've heard the parts can run up to $500 or so, but it's worth it because they don't charge labor. Just do a search of 2nd Gen Toyotas on this board for "2005 Frame Rust" and you'll get more than you will ever want to read. Good luck and post photos when you can.
