Enjoy a slower, less efficient, less powerful v6 Tacoma that has worse driving dynamics, then

Who cares if it goes slower. What a sec more if that, big deal. I pull more than that 4 is rated for with ALL that extra power. "All" that added power for what ? Needs a dc motor and battery for torque now ?
Enjoy the higher price and maintenance costs for not much extra. Wait til after the 7 year extended warranty and you will be biting nails. These trucks are getting way too complex and costly, not like the old days. Lot of not needed stuff.

I'll believe it when I see it. If the 4 cylinder turbos from Chevy (worst fuel economy) and Ford (slightly better fuel economy) offer any prediction of what Toyota can produce. Here's hoping they can come up with something big otherwise I'll be keeping my truck for a lot longer or buying a Frontier if they come down in price.

Nobody wants a 4 cylinder truck.

I love the new Tacoma. I am just skeptical about the powertrain. My nephew has a new Tundra and we towed a 2500LB trailer for 400 miles. We were averaging 8-10 mpg. I was not impressed. The real world numbers are not matching the advertised numbers. I am interested in the real world use of that 4 banger, not opposed just skeptical.

Sounds like at worst you end up with the same mileage but with far more torque, delivered at a far lower RPM, and more useful power under the curve.

    That seems like a win

Seems like a Toyota thing. My Tacoma gets 14mpg at best towing a PWC single or a utility trailer with 2-3k lbs of firewood. Dad has a Sierra 1500 with the 6.2 and max tow rear end and gets 17 towing the same loads. I had a 3.0L Duramax before my Tacoma and averaged 28mpg in a half ton. Toyota does a lot well, but towing ain't it (and that includes space ships).

Increased low-end torque will come at the cost of longevity and durability. This is a near certainty.

Look at the issues people are having with the 3.5, I wouldn't call it bullet proof by any means.

This statement smacks of uneducated and naïve speculation and should be ignored as baseless.

We’re long past the days of the 22R and 3RZ. The new 2.4T will be just fine.

Smaller engine with a turbo to compensate in HP... the bigger the issue down the road and the reliability is questionable as well. Hopefully I'm wrong though, only time will tell.

Yeah. I guess if you want to tow...buy a diesel. But man the Tacomas are so sharp looking. It is all anesthetics.

That is my major concern with turbos. You are already seeing issues with the chevy 4cyl turbos

Issues with one does not in any way indicate an issue with the other. Said another way, just because Chevy did not engineer their small turbo motors properly doesn't mean Toyota will make the same error. The fact is, the technology to make reliable turbocharged motors is many decades old; I bought my first turbocharged car 38 years ago and drove the snot out of it for nearly 200,000 miles with never an issue. My next car had a similar story except it only had 120,000 miles on it when I sold it due to moving to the upper east side of Manhattan and no longer needed a car.

What issues do they have? I googled it but cannot find anything beyond "poor fuel economy"

Also, Tundra has no issue with the actual Turbo engine itself. It has issue with the actuator, which controls the wastegate.

Kind of like the RTV issue in the GR86. Engine for both vehicles are fine.
