I run a single member LLC and I would be mortified if I let a clients job slip through the cracks.

Standards are a personal thing that not everyone has.

I see this a lot behind the scenes. Some fab companies are awesome with quick delivery. Others...yeah...

Asking a lot of questions before the credit card information is given out has been a good way to do business for this guy.

I am confused, and I've read your responses several times, and for the life of me, I don't understand your point.
    • Nobody called you a dick?
    • Nobody accused you of slamming anyone specifically?
    • What does the construction industry have to do with the niche of highly specialized offroad fab shops?
    • Nobody thought you pissed in their cheerios? They gave rational explanations of why you may have experienced what you experienced, and agreed that it sucks and is an unfortunate part of the industry.
    • Proceeds to call us girls, as what, an insult?
    • Get some? Get some what?
Easy solution would be to find reputable shops (plenty of sponsors on here) and go from there. Or don't wait the "standard", whatever that means, of 4+ months to inquire about your order.

The rest has honestly made me feel dumber as a person just for having read it.

    Frustrating I know.
Sometimes I look at this way-
If these guys hired 1-2 office folks, 1-2 more fab guys, borrowed money to implement software for biz dev, more stock, larger building,,,,, what would that do to their cost? Which in turn, what would that do to my cost? aaannnddd possibly product quality?

careful what you wish for. Sometimes the finest products come from the people who focus on that,,, and nothing else.

I think the issue here, is lack of communication.
    On both parts.

If the business is a one man band and the owner wants to keep the quality that only they can provide and they have a 4-6 month lead time they are obviously pulling in enough profit to employ someone to do the admin.
If they’re letting things fall through the cracks they are in too deep and need the assistance.

I’m a photographer and there is no way I could do my job (photographing and editing) and all the admin stuff as a one man band. If I didn’t have my admin person then I would have to take less jobs so I could do each part of the business properly.

Simply put some people don’t know when to say no and they dig themselves a hole and the client suffers.

And sometimes people just don’t want to keep up with the headache of running a business at that scale.

Everything I’ve seen around here has convinced me that is never want to run a public facing retail business.

In a lot of ways a good fabber shares the same mindset as an artist - amazing at the things they produce but terrible at time management and/or people relations. Looking at it from their point of view however, for every patient customer there are 20 that are furious that product delivery isn't at the same speeds as Amazon.

If something goes over a week over the estimate, a nice phone call of "I'm in no hurry, I'm just checking in on how things are going" works wonders.

On that note setting expectations is important. I tell my clients that their photos will be ready in 2-3 months and I keep to my word.

Sounds like the op’s fabricator didn’t keep his word, just plain forgot about the job.

I have clients that book 2 years in advance and I don’t re-connect with them until 2 months before the wedding. Having a system in place and not over/double booking is key to keeping a business running smoothly.

I may catch crap for this but..
good photographers seem to be more prevalent , Its less common to find a good fabricator. Its just not a skill alot of people are willing do day in and out. welding in a non air conditioned shop with long sleeves and jeans will weed out a lot of people in the summer time.

you got to peoples weddings and take pictures.
