You are correct in your buying strategy. Also if you can deal with no trade in will also give you better leverage. As I have stated above dealers have got to move that inventory but at the same time they are not going to give these vehicles away. I guess it depends on your situation. Take me for instance, I am not in a situation where I need to have that truck. I can afford to wait it out because at 40,000 plus OTD is just a bit too high for my blood.

Of course doc fees are $299 capped by law and universal in MD. Also quoted $399 for tags which sounds outrageously high unless there is some excise tax that I don't recall dealing with last time I bought a car? Thinking I'm just getting blasted in the ass on the back end here.

This is why I was suggesting (in another thread) that you actually use the cash thing to your advantage. If you know you have the money to just buy the truck outright, then tell the finance guy to give you a 12% interest rate and make a ton of money on that portion of the deal. Then, remove the doc fees and everything else. When you get home, write a check to Toyota finance to pay the whole thing off.

wow... that was a long post! technically, the dealer MAY be a bit more willing to bring the price down a bit if you finance, but there's no guarantee. I always have the price agreed upon long before I even step foot on the dealership and absent of any discussions of how I'll be paying for it, so it's irrelevant to me. There's a number of factors... trade in (front end), purchase (back end), financing, where they're at in relation to hitting their manufacturer quotas, add on purchases (warranty, undercoating, etc.) - the dealer will access all of these and is okay losing money on one if it's made up appropriately on the other. Thankfully I've been around the business most my life and my buddy owns a bunch of dealerships so I have access to the real auctions, info on how to buy a car, etc. It's a strange business.

I agree with part of the post above. Need to agree first on the price with the salesman. I think the cost of the vehicle and those "other" fees are managed independently. So, once you agree to the price itself with sales, then maybe you can leverage financing to remove those other fees.
