Just did a recent oil change and when I started the truck for the first time this morning like I always do and let it warm up it had a hollow slightly squeaky knocking noise. Maybe this is ok because it stops but should I be looking into a rebuild or new motor? It’s never done this before and nothing changed about how I drove it or where it sat. It’s been colder and not done it so I’m not sure what’s up. Sounds like rod knock. Maybe a lighter oil for in the winter? Or try to park it inside? 2.7l i4 5spd with intake headers and EGR delete. I have a supercharger on order but would it not be a good idea to instal with it doing this?

    Way toooo ague.
    How many miles?
    What weight oil?
Is this the first start up since the o.c.?
Any idea of your normal oil pressure?

But the chance you have too heavy weight oil for 10* is high.

5w30 full synthetic STP with a brand new STP filter, 166k miles no the oil is about 600 miles old. No clue on oil pressure but I can probably get a gauge.

Starting to think after doing some research it may be piston slap is that bad? I’m sure it isn’t good but 9 times out of 10 I let the truck warm up to operating temp fully before I start driving. Maybe some Lucas oil stabilizer?

Thats a good start. Especially if you're considering the additional burden of a supercharger. Whats your compression sitting at? 166k is either alot or just broken in, depends on how its been taken care of all its life.

Not sure on compression I can get a kit and test that here soon. I’ve had her since 140k miles and been conservative with the RPMs but I do drive it every day and get on it once and awhile when at car meets and whatnot.

You can sometimes distinguish a piston slap. Its somewhat of a hard double rattle is the only way I can describe it. But if its 9 out of 10 times (if identical conditions), that would eliminate a given mechanical failure like a collapsed piston.

So it’s probably just noise and leave it alone? I’ll try to park it inside tonight and see what it does in the morn. It didn’t do it when I started it after school here and coolant temp was 50 degrees

I wonder what the screen on your oil pick up tube looks like?

Wouldn't worry about it much.....at least for now.

these make a lot of noise.......my ac clutch bearings been squealing on cold startups......going 4yrs now

I kinda baby mine.....when it gets below 20.....I put a 75w drop light right under the pan
when I know I got to kick it early in the morning.....90% engine wear and oil degradation happens then...
Reason why there's so many still running in the south.

Brand new oil is thick......its best to have 500mi or more on oil when you get into the super cold of winter...
not mine findings....oil geek..........put off changing in mid winter, even if you have to go over..

    So you've done everything right

IF you have an auto....let it warm up couple extra mins.....especially if you have an external cooler
tranny needs to warm up more than the engine....

Me thinks best you can do when you exist in extremes.....is change the oil little more often

My 2000 Honda CRV made a pretty disconcerting noise the other day on startup when temps were in the single digits. Cars act differently when they get that cold. Not great for them but probably nothing meaningful.

The oil is cold @10 degrees.
    And it doesn't move well.
Nothing moves well when it cold. Not even me.....

    The possibilities are endless.

I'd personally not worry too much about it.
Most all the vehicles I've owned made more noise when cold on a startup.
I'd worry more if the noise doesn't go away. Or it progressively takes longer to go away.

Until then, no need to worry.
Why? What are you going to do about it?
If the engine is on its way out. It's on its way out. You aren't going to stop it.

And I honestly do NOT think the engine is "on its way out".
    Sounds normal to me.

Now that's a good use of the money, those little buzz boxes make great power with a turbo... just sayin haha. Just had a 2RZ swapped toyota pickup on 35s on the dyno that made 316whp 338wtq at 15.3psi.

Try parking it inside and see if it makes a difference. My bet is that it will and it's the low temps. 14 degrees overnight where I I'm expecting a slower cranking speed and some minor initial momentary noises. Oil is 5w30 Mobil1 and OEM filter. If yours keeps up the noise I'd swap the oil filter to an OEM one and see if it makes less noise or goes away.
Try parking it inside and see if it helps or the noise goes away. 14 degree low overnight where I am and I'm expecting some momentary/initial extra noise and slower cranking this morning. (4.0L 134k with 5w30 full synthetic Mobil1 and OEM Toyota filter) Maybe swap the filter in your truck to an OEM and see if it helps. ($7.50 at WallyWorld $10 at dealer)

I parked inside and it didn’t do it, just the little struggle right after it fires to build oil pressure. It’s just the cold
