Just surface rust? Should I be worried?

Sorry for another frame rust thread.

Purchased a 2015 Tacoma with only 30k on the odometer 1 year ago. Live in central California, but do surf on a weekly basis so there’s some salt exposure there I guess.

Noticed this today (see photos). Should I be concerned? Or just unavoidable surface rust?

I also have the Toyota certified used 7 year power train warranty. Would that cover a frame replacement if ever needed?

    Thanks in advance.

EDIT: added a few more photos. Thanks for all the replies. I know I’m probably being way too paranoid but it helps to get some input.

Yeah extended warranties don't cover rust. The only thing that does would be the comprehensive warranty but that's long expired for a 2015.

As someone from Michigan I can tell you that's nothing to be concerned about. It's very clean.

As for replacement, you may not be eligible because you aren't likely in one of the states that the recall campaign covers. You'd have to check with the dealer. If it is eligible, you'll then have to see if the service was already done. If it has your time has already begun. If not, get it done.

According to the recall parameters, shouldn't the OP's truck be eligible for a frame replacement from Toyota through 2026 or 2027?

Trying to find rust in these pics is like trying to find Waldo. I think you'll be fine.

If you aren’t careful it will look like this in 28 years.

Underside of my 87 with almost 300k on it. Nothing to worry abt OP, the frame will probably outlive the rest of the truck.

According to what I see, it does not apply to California. It only applies to:

    • Connecticut
    • Deleware
    • Illinois
    • Indiana
    • Kentucky
    • Massachusetts
    • Maryland
    • Mane
    • Michigan
    • Minnesota
    • New Hampshire
    • New Jersey
    • New York
    • Ohio
    • Pennsylvania
    • Rhode Island
    • Virginia
    • Vermont
    • Wisconsin
    • West Virginia
    • Washington DC
    • And obviously Canada based on the article @ABA180 posted

True, depending on where the truck lived its first few years before OP purchased it he might have an argument for coverage however.

Is a truck purchased new in California or another mild weather state eligible if relocated to one of the states on the list? Pretty sure I heard of a 2nd Gen from Florida rotting out...

Possibly. My truck was purchased in CT by the original owner and I purchased it in MI in 2020. The campaign was expanded to 2017 after that and I received a notice in the mail.

The thing is this campaign comes from a lawsuit which largely had to do with 1st gens and early 2nd gens. In the campaign it mentions that this is accelerated by cold weather states which use road salt. But the fact is that frames and vehicles rust and can do so anywhere depending on how they were taken care of. I've seen far worse rust on GM vehicles that are 2 years old than I've seen on my truck currently and GM, Ford, and the others pretty much consider it to be normal wear. Toyota is at least doing something about it.

The list is short a state......Iowa.

My frame was replaced when the previous owner had the truck.....frame replaced in Feb 2018. Truck has lived in Iowa all its life.

BTW, I wouldn't classify that as "surface rust"......its just dirt.

It's worth asking at least, if it lived in a cold state for a few years at first especially..

Both being cold weather places but yes..Mine lived in MA all its life. And yes, my wife had a 96 that was one of the first in the state taken back in 2008

Yeah, that's why I said "possibly." But then again it wasn't expanded to include 2017 until after I already purchased it as well.

Also, of note: Toyota began applying CRC at the factory around late 2016. My VIN indicated it had been done from factory so, unfortunately, my 10 year warranty is only good from date of first use, which was December of 2016.
