i picked one of these up a month ago out of the trash.

it's currently hard parked in my driveway. i'm figuring out how/what i want to do with it. 13" tires are a possibility, i'm also considering 1/8-1/5 scale r/c brushless systems... a gt3 needs to be capable of speed!

The wheels and tires came in…now I’m running into the same road block you hit with the bearing size 5/8 reducing down to the axle size 9.97mm~10mm. I was going to try these steel tubes cut down to length with some slight play. TBD still hunting…

i didn't call any steel suppliers, but i was never able to locate any sort of correct-O.D. steel tubing in long lengths.
iirc, this is the spacers i believe i had located before, like i said earlier, you'd need two per tire, which makes this 'feasible, but ridiculously expensive':
    https://www.homedepot.com/p/Hillman...Seamless-Steel-Spacer-5-Pack-880419/204724816

the rear spare is mounted on a chopped up section of dirt-cheap curtain rod. it was the correct OD for the wheel bearing ID, but was extremely thin, and couldn't be considered for a load bearing solution.

i had popped out one of the bearings, and just started walking around hardware stores checking for any sort of metal hollow round stock they have that might work in any department.

it was in rough shape.. the hood was missing, and the front end looks like it's been driven through a barn at full speed. it's all pushed back, and the lower bumper support is entirely deformed. but all the main plastics are in decent shape minus a few cracked clips.

i managed to locate a replacement hood, one of the last available, but in black. current plan is to wrap it with carbon fiber vinyl. it's normally too gimmicky/boy-racer for me, but i think i'm going over the top with this with some red underglow and some functional head lights with low/high beams, so it'll end up working out.

i recently changed jobs, which means changing tool requirements and extra expenses. and it's now summer, so i'm not likely to do much with it until the coming winter when i'm looking for something to do indoors. so don't expect much in updates on it for some time.

Pics of the switches in place of the stock non functional air vents…added an amber light bar in the bumper to mimic the sso bumper mounting location.

@soundman98 i found a dune racer for $25 that’s pretty beat up. But at that starting price, it can get pneumatic tires and bigger batteries without feeling bad about the cost…more to come in the tinkering…still on the hunt for a gt3

@soundman98 found a Porsche…$80 but it’s in good running condition and everything works…started on retrofitting projector headlights, drls and taillight strip leds.

Best part is the projectors light up the road for 30ft…it’ll be ready for nighttime at 10mph’s…lol

Man I wish our tacos had cutoffs this nice

    Progress update…
The front end tire swap was pretty straight forward with the aluminum tube spacer. Pics below.

waiting on the rear end parts to finish it up and see how quiet it is now.

I ended up using a plastic 1/4 washer as a spacer, the existing inner washer, the aluminum tube axle diameter spacer (cut to 2.25”) for the wheels and the existing outer washer and nut.

aluminum tubing used as the axle spacer

This aluminum tube ID fits the segmart Tacoma axle front and rear perfectly and the OD fits the wheel ID perfectly.

comparing to the stock plastic tires these are definitely not as wide. Looks like my boys rocking skinny’s. TBD on how it does off-road…hopefully the additional rotational mass doesn’t affect the already horrible mpgs…

Rears were a little more work.

Had to cut a whole in the wheel adapter to account for the bearing. The rest was pretty similar to the front, the aluminum spacer was cut to 3” this time and I had to put a 1/4 spacer on the outside this time.

The quietness is definitely under rated. Before you could barely hear the radio in full volume, now you can hear it very easily on half volume.

Dune got some new tires since the rears were worn through. Found these and I just had to knock off the tabs on the inside of the plastic two piece wheel to fit these tires. No tubes needed:
    https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B06X9Y2YL3?ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title

They fit like they were supposed to be there. Just enough clearance not to rub.

working finding a replacement for the front since they don’t have a full two piece plastic rim like the rears. Most likely going with a one piece wheel/tire replacement.

Baby Tacoma arrived up this weekend. Had to get the green to match my truck.

First mod: vinyl wrapping the rear bumper black. Might do the fender flares next.

A few, mainly added skids. I like leaving the suspension alone. I drive forest service dirt roafs in the desert west extremely extremely too fast. Toyota nailed this suspension going 65 across desert terrain. Changing it is dumb unless you have a specific need like crawling or mud.
Just wait till they get a bit older. At 9 he can fully drive MT... prefers the old 07 access cab. It's clutch is more responsive.

5 point harnesses going into the dune in prep for the 24v conversion.

Cut slots for the harness with the dremel router bit after drilling end pilot holes with the drill. Harness from Amazon:
    https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B08ZSHKCK6?ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title

Ended up taking a page out of mltoys playbook and used bolts and washers to terminate the harness ends after melting a hole through them with the backside of a tack nail and the help of a butane torch.

For the shoulder harnesses I went with a triangle bed tie down I had lying around for the rally look. I had to notch out a little bit of the gearbox cover for it to fit flush with the bed tie down wedged in between the two plastic pieces (held in with the original screw).

In the pic of the bottom you can see the pre existing slot templates in the plastic seat mold and the lap and anti-submarine belts terminating in the same fashion.

Just finished wrapping the fenders in matte black vinyl so it matches the TRD off-road fenders.
