Crawl box would be nice and much less work, but WAY more money, especially factoring in 2 new driveshafts. Also it's a little lower on the priority list since I have an Auto. Just cant afford to plop an extra $2500 into that yet. Also cant start the SAS until almost August so I have until then to prep the axle.

That being said, was the flip actually that bad? I did find Zuks post and was reading through that a minute ago, doesn't seem like the worst undertaking. Considering I have 2 months to work on it in my "free time"

That's a lot of coin to add into an axle swap....I'm super happy with my Tacoma case with a crawlbox in front of it too...plus he's auto so that pushes the need for a crawler way down the list.

I think 38? Pretty sure. Just before school bus.
Dual lockers and big tires are a must, it's a double black diamond. Fj80 on 40s pulled cable

Not sure, I'd have to look at my map at home. I think it was 15, then 38, then school bus in order on the map

I've run most of them it's just been a while. Hell I ran trail 3 when just a rear locker would get you out the top.

From what I've seen from people's pictures from 2 or 3 years ago, rain and buggies have destroyed those trails. Even with 35s and dual locked, my setup was barely cutting it in places, and usually my lines were limited, and the 2nd gen on 37s had even more trouble getting through it

Yep yep! Got tired of IFS. Too flimsy and mine is falling apart, not worth the time and effort of repairing. Also about to buy a daily, so figured it was time for a real axle and some big rubbers in a year

If I was in the east like you I'd be rocking a solid axle vehicle too (prolly not a taco). Your wheeling is all tight spaces and sloppy surfaces, lots of skinny pedal and bouncing. I like to go fast and there's lots of open space out here, I'd probably flip again with SFA but man it would be fun to build.

I decided to stick with the taco and not trade down to a minitruck mostly for the v6 and also because I already have this thing. But with the v6 it should be streetable with 39s or 40s still, which will be nice.
We do have some great places for slow technical crawling, like AOP, Hot Springs, and Windrock... it just seems to be raining every time I go lol

Very jealous of your wheeling out west. Hopefully I'll make it out next summer to wheel with you guys

Got the axle out of the truck and into the back yard, waiting on the IFS hubs and steering box to get here. I think this thing may have a locker, but not sure, I just hope it isn't welded. With both hubs locked, when spinning one side the other side spins the same direction, and spinning the pinion makes both sides spin the same direction. Holding the pinion in place does not allow me to move either side at all. Because of this I have a suspicion that there is a locker in there, but won't know until I get time to pull the third one night this week.

It's a pain in the ass man. It's for sure going to take you longer than 2months. I had almost 6 into mine if you include axle prep. You will need a new front driveshaft anyway depending on what suspension setup you use. I also am running stock driveshafts that were shortened at a local shop, $150 bucks a shaft, one of the cheaper parts of the dual swap. Also look for used dual mini truck setups, then you only need to buy 1 adapter.

Yea the Tacoma case works, but if he's using an off the shelf Toyota axle, it makes more sense to swap the cases instead. The fact he is putting duals into an auto truck means he can build them for less than $1000 bucks total. All he needs is 2 adapters and 2 gear drive cases. Cheaper if he finds used adapters.

I meant 2 months just to prep the axle, before I can start taking any IFS parts off. It'll be August before I cut the frame

Under $1000 you say? I remember looking into it a bit and it was looking closer to the $3000 range so I noped out

You need the Tacoma trans to gear drive adapter, then an mc08 or whatever Marlin's calling the crawl box to gear drive case adapter these days, the 23 spline input and 2 gear drive cases (150 each). Build the duals yourself and save big $$$$. Then to swap it you would have to move some exhaust on the pax side. There's some people who have done this, nothing too major in the grand scheme of things.

You can find the adapters and even dual setups for sale online pretty cheap if your willing to buy used stuff. I built my first set of Tacoma duals that way.

    I'm interested.. looking at things.
Marlin taco to gear drive adapter is $400, Marlin mc08 is $549, so that's $950 for those plus the cost of the 2 cases. Using Trail gear stuff could save a little money but still pretty expensive. An already built dual from marlin is only $2000. Then probably $400 to get both driveshafts adapted.. hmmm idk

Unless you are going forward shackles or a 3link, you will need a new front shaft anyway.

Fair enough. Had considered a front shackle just to make the axle swing back but wasn't sure if I'd need a front shaft still.
I keep going back and forth on shackle location but today when I was talking to someone I figured all the stock leaf spring vehicles use a front shackle, so it makes sense.
