I'm not hatin on K&N. Have same real world experience from using them on other vehicles since they came out. The thing that made me swap was one less thing to do - the reoiling after washing. aFe filters do not require that step.

As far as the cabin air filter, yep, I hate my fuckin money and bought one. All the money I won't spend on another one every so often will make it OK. I had the homemade one. Whatever. It does the job, is washable and the electrostatic is rechargeable. Buy one if you want or don't. Hate on them or not. IDGAF. Other people's opinions are not my marching orders and peer pressure doesn't mean shit. TFB.

I love K&N. I installed their new brake lights and my brake lights are now faster than any other vehicle on the street. Can't beat them for the price either, only $50 for each bulb. Of course you can always finance as well.

I had it installed on my truck. The initial stink was pretty bad for the first week. After that it started to subside, but it always lingered if I tried to find the smell. I work in construction so the truck was exposed to extremely dusty conditions. Normally the OEM filter would be pretty dirty by 15K. With the K&N cabin filter, I would wash it every 10K and have fresh air all the time.

The only downside is that you need to buy the refresher kit to maintain the filter's "electrostatically charged" medium (according to K&N). With the price of the refresher kit and the filter, the overall cost is around $55. The cost of an OEM or equivalent cabin filter can cost around $6-15. So depending on what conditions you drive in, it could take awhile to make-up for initial cost of the K&N filter. Using a replacement interval of 15K, it could take 4 or over 8 changes for the K&N filter to start paying for itself. Another thing I want to mention is that the disposable cabin filters can be bought with activated charcoal to filter out fumes. The K&N cabin filter does not have activated charcoal, but neither does the OEM.

If you drive in really dusty conditions and plan on owning the Tacoma for quite a while, and don't have a need for activated charcoal, I'd say its worth it for the money. Personally, I would have just stuck with OEM or equivalent paper filter for the convenience of not having to wash it and max out the replacement intervals.
