AFEs will let dirt into the engine. I've seen it with my own eyes. One good day in the desert and the inside of the filter looks just as bad as the outside. No bueno for your engine.

No worse than a K&N. All the oil samples I have donme with a K&N filter installed, have come back with the silica levels maxed. THATS no bueno for an engine.

??? Not sure how silica in the oil pan relates. Educate me please

All I know is the oil in the air filter does a great job at catching debris. Hence oil based filters are used on motorcross bikes which are constantly exposed to dust. The AFE breaths better than stock but how can this be without creating bigger holes for the air/debris to go through. True the K&N has bigger holes as well however, the debris sticks to the oil soaked cloth before it can pass through. I'll leave it at that. I don't want to get devout AFE lovers panicked.

Silica = Dirt. The K&N air filter oil doesnt catch all of it. In fact, if you run it long enough, you'll see dirt start to build up behind the filter, in the intake tract. no filter will give more hp than maybe 2, over the stock air filter. If you want best filtration, run an OEM filter. If you want 1 or 2 more hp., run a higher flow filter.

I purchased mine purely to be able to clean it frequently after offroading excursions. Wasn't really expecting much in the way of hp gains. I have noticed you must be conservative when applying the oil so it doesn't get into the intake tract but there's always a double edged sord it seems. Anyhow I love the K&N and thought I'd share these photos for some on the fence about what to get. Cheers!

Very easy. Buy a K&N recharge kit when you get the filter. Remove the filter from the vehicle when you believe it may be dirty. Spray each side liberally with K&N cleaner. Let it soak for ten minutes. Rinse the filter in water until no more dirty water is washing off. Let it dry out until the filter element is dry. Apply K&N oil conservatively to the outside until the element is evenly soaked pink. Reinstall and the job is done.

Time estimate: 15 minutes to clean. 2 hours to air dry. 2 minutes to apply fresh oil.

Biggest problem with the oil on wet filters is the oil clogs up your MAF sensor. As stated by someone previous the truck runs like shit, usually because of too much oil on the filter.

If the oil is applied in excess than it will get on to the MAF. As I stated, 'the oil is to be applied conservatively to the outside portion.' The Mass Air Flow Sensor is easily cleanable with MAF spray from an auto store. The MAF should be cleaned on occasion anyhow as it will get dirty regardless of what filter you use.

The best filter to use to keep 99.99% of dust out is a paper filter.

I would be careful on spraying that cleaner on the MAF, too much pressure from the spray will break that tiny wire on it.

i've been running a K&N drop in since day 1 with no problems. people who end up having problems dont know how to properly oil a filter... its not rocket science.
