As long as its shape is correct and you've maintained it, its pretty much lifetime.

I've seen them distort and warp. Along with excessive dirt will cause me to toss them.

Had the whole shebang on my ranger, otherwise always been the OEM panel.

Hmm that does make some sense regarding the cone filter.

After having my k&n air filter on the tundra for 150k it didn't look really great. Went to wix air filters after that. Seemed my intake system stayed cleaner. I'm not sold on those k&n filters that their as good or better....maybe they breath better if you have mods to your engine.

Yes better air flow = better throttle response

    Not necessarily...
Some system designs(e.g. velocity stacks)change the velocity profile...
While overall flow may be improved, the MAF is no longer getting the higher velocity air that was present with the stock system. /rhetorical/Can a stock or recalibrated ECU take advantage?

I lost two ATV engines during one particularly dusty summer. The K&N products allowed dust through and it trashed the rings and plasma coated cylinders. Learning the hard way hurts, but it will not be soon forgotten.
