I meant a boosted (application), I'm not talking about IPhone apps. It would be smart to tune a vehicle if it's modded and there's software to tune it.

I've got no issues running K&N filters , they flow very well and make good HP !!

I knew what you meant. All boosted motors should be tuned. That being with a piggy back or full standalone. I would never turbo a vehicle without tuning. So like stated. To take advantage of an intake you get more gains if boosted.

On an n/a application your gains are very minimal. Just makes a nice sound.

This is what was on mine when I bought my Tacoma:
    https://www.knfilters.com/search/product.aspx?prod=57-9013

Yesterday I took it apart and cleaned every single piece with CRC MAF cleaner, including the MAF sensor. There was oil residue all through the setup. It is spotless now. You have to know how to clean the filter and to oil the filter correctly.

Oh, I thought you meant tuning an iPhone application for a K&N filter, how silly of me. Now it all makes sense.

Big difference between carburated motors and fuel injected motors, about 20years of engineering advancement difference. Apples to horse meat there bud.

    :deadhorse:

For anything fuel injected stay the hell away from oilled filters.

K&N built their reputation on carbed motors and are trying to ride it still today with FI motors but it does nothing but damage to your MAF sensor, engine, and wallet.

I have a K&N cold air intake with throttle body spacer. It was a present so I didn’t have to pay for it. But between that and and MRBP exhaust I like the sound of the truck. I didn’t lose any mileage and I have had it On the truck for 30k miles and no check engine lights or mass air flow issues either.

My truck isn’t a mall crawler either. Been bashed in the hills of Nevada and used for light prerunning all the way to Pensilvania and ran though Rausch creek off road park and played in the mud.
So my opinion is if you have the $$ and want it then go for it. TBH though in the cold the constant whistle can get extremely annoying until you can just ignore it.

The sound kills it for me the most, they almost look cool but aren't well designed and the lack of power gain is lame. It should make power if it's gonna sound like does. I had one and gave it away after 10k, too cheaply made for the price. I ride street bikes and if you wanna really go fast get one of those, because when you hit the throttle hard and wearing only a t-shirt you're skin on you're arms flaps in the wind from the acceleration. Being really fast puts it into perspective how cheap and insane fast a bike is! compare that to wasting money on stuff that doesn't make a pinch of power. Most bikes are less than ten thousand and can do 200mph! It's annoying hearing mall crawlers stomp the pedal and make more racket than actual speed, I know these types of people probably never had a real fast vehicle because if they did they would not accessorize these vehicles that are near maxed out on power already from the factory. It's like the vid of the hellcat getting spanked by the tesla, if you want power buy a vehicle that can easily make more power or already fast, it will be less money in the long run. The 5VZ is quick but takes real big money to make an impression against the new vehicles out now and some old ones too fwiw.

I loved smoking 600cc street bikes in my DSM. They are always so surprised.

I called K&N about a part with this setup that was worn out and they sent me (free of charge) a new one. Just received the new part, but there was an issue with that fitting into the actual filter. They are sending me a new filter also free of charge. Some of the best customer service I have ever had. I would rather have the stock setup, but this is what came with the truck when I bought it

I love the sound. Call me old school but when offroading I like to hear the motor. I can easily feel the rpm instead of looking at the tach. I also grew up smoking intaked Honda kids so it's a nostalgic sound.

That being said I only run oil free filters. They foul mafs all day and void warranty.

I drove over 60k with K&N made TRD oiled filter. No problems, no foul mafs. You need to know how to oil the filter right.

But anyways, I moved back to OEM filter, the filtration was not perfect. The 2010+ 4Runner/FJ Cruiser filter fits nicely to the newer type TRD CAI (for 07-09 FJ).

Your right. The oiling does need to be very light. I just don't like how dirty the sensor gets after time. The dry is never a problem.

There was lots of oil in my setup. Used 1 full can of CRC MAF cleaner and half a can of brake cleaner to do all the other parts.

I installed the k&n intake on my truck about 1000 miles ago. The housing mounts didn't quite match up and after a bunch of time and curse words I got it fitted. Anyways, I love it. Sounds cool and throttle response is a bit quicker. The rpms kinda get outta wack at high speeds and acceleration. Haven't seen any sensors or lights on the dash tho thank god... I know people are 50/50 on it being worth it for the money but I'm a fan. No void of warranty like some have said. I've had it over at the dealer since. Tidy's up the engine bay too. About the oiling of the filter. Do you have a link to a good video of someone doing it properly? Also, how many miles will it be until I should check it?

000_0002.jpg noticed subject of aftermarket cold air intakes pops up often, bought my Toyo new in 97 installed Injen cold air intake, supplied with oil type filter, 20 years and 134000 miles later never issue with air mass sensor, you just don't over oil filter after 3 times year cleaning. however at recent tune up replaced oil type filter with new nano fiber oil less filter from Injen. cannot debate real world horsepower gain but combined with free exhaust, I agree with old school approach on a engine performance easier air enters and leaves out exhaust equals smoother running, better performance package all around.
