It was part of the penniless hobo experience. 0/7 stars. Would not recommend.

Do you have the 4cyl or I6?

A penniless hobo on Maui? Can't be too bad...

Beats being a penniless hobo in the cold winners of the Midwest

It was bad enough that you'd have to pay me a lot of money to go back for any reason. I have a ton of stories from that time of my life that stand out as good reasons why I had less fun than I had hoped.

Their island culture is borderline isolationist and xenophobic compared to what I was used to. Think secessionist Texas but the saying is "Reinstate the Hawaiian Nation" and that doesn't include outsiders lol. That doesn't pose a problem when you're spending money there while on a vacation, but the attitude changes when you're living on "their" island. Obviously it's not universal and there are always awesome people, but it wasn't for me. After a year or so of struggling to find a job beyond the contract work I started with, I started looking for an out. Which is hard when you're homeless, literally penniless, and nobody will hire you even though you have skills and experience in the job you're applying for. They just wanna hook up their cousins.

@CygnusX191 You can see my porch tarp in Google Maps if you go to 20.877066114096902, -156.27920922330225 the neighbors bitched about it so much that I ended up taking it down and spending my own money to build a wooden porch covering.

I think somebody else moved into the cabin I built and lived in on that property. The guy had me build it so that the permanent caretaker could live there but as far away from his cabin as possible. He led me on letting me think that would be me since I was building the structures and setting up his permaculture "farm," but here we are.

If you're ever in the Makawao/ Haiku area, stop at Hanzawa's Variety store and get some chili and rice. It's dank AF. They have other good stuff too, but I mostly got filtered water from their machine, chili with rice, and a few 40s when I was there.

Do you hunt? If you end up going I can suggest some amazing spearfishing areas. You can hunt axis deer when in season and there are opportunities on Maui for Hawaiian style pig sticks (the local word for a pig hunt with dogs and knives, I just went with whatever they called it). Goats everywhere too. We caught a few to take to the farm.

When I was there, we occasionally had wild cow problems. They live in the Makawao forest reserve and would trash my fences to get to our gardens and horse pasture. I don't know if they do hunts for them though because when I was there, nobody believed me about the cows. Now it's pretty common knowledge. My first face to face encounter was interesting lol

When I type this stuff out it sounds a lot more wild than I felt like it was at the time. In hindsight, most of my activities and decisions were beyond wild to most people.

Or you can do it the other way similar to what I did. $0.

    https://wwoof.net/

You'll get a real good taste of serfdom. I didn't do that program, but I ran into a lot of "wwoof-ers" and I can say that it is not the way.

@Juisebocks you should think about writing a book about that time in your life. I honestly bet it would do well.

So my job has some weird perks. Been offering to buy lunch for one of the supervisors at a customer mine for a while but he keeps declining. He did say what his preferred beer was, though, and my boss said to put it on the work card. Been sitting in his driveway for a few hours now...
